Can dogs get chigger bites? We went to our property this weekend and the chiggers were really bad. Toby keeps licking his paws and running along the carpet rubbing the sides of his head like he's itchy. Can dogs get chigger bites? What can I put on them? I gave him a bath when we got home and used the same shampoo and conditioner I always do. Most of the time he is fine and acts normal but at other times he's running around like he's all itchy. He has no ticks on him, that I'm sure of. We've had a LOT of rain lately and I guess it's brought out all the flying critters. The only place he could have got them would have been in the grass in our yard at the camper as we have a deck so they don't lay in the grass or dirt. Any suggestions will be appreciated. FYI - he does take heartworm meds. |
Good question! One of my boys currently has about 4 itchy bites on him that remind me of chigger bites and he has itchy front paws/legs. I keep checking and don't see any evidence of fleas. Should I put some kind of topical on these bites? |
Yep, My dog & I got them about 2 years ago! It was awful! There were some taller weeds at a Mud Run & he just plopped down in them...we used Chigger Rid cream. Good Luck! |
Thanks Kay. Bumping up to see if anyone else has had this issue. I did call the vet and she said if he continues to lick his paws after a couple more days to bring him in because licking their paws could also be a sign of thyroid issues. I was told to give him benadryl (1/2 pill) every 8 hours. She said I could use a hydrocortizone spray but he'd probably just lick it off as well. Thought I would share what the vet said in case anyone else has a dog that licks their paws a lot. My husband said Toby didn't lick hardly at all today so maybe it's just his normal hyper energy that is making him do it too. But I will definitely keep an eye on him. |
