Hypoglycemia
 
Anybody's adult Yorkie shake on occasion and then gets better after eating?

Ellie seems to do it (rarely). She never, ever seizes. I know she does it if she has to pee really bad, but I have to wonder if she has some mild hypo going on. But then it never goes beyond shaking and it does not happen often if she hasn't eaten for awhile, so not sure.:confused: I just find it odd. I'm vaguely remembering one other time when this happened where eating seems to help it...

Well, I can tell you it won't cost very much to find out. My vet kept Lucy one entire day where they did a fasting blood glucose; exercised her; tested again; fed her; tested again . . .

She was there all day and I was expecting a HUGE bill. Total - $68.00.

We did find out that she is NOT hypoglycemic. So . . if you really want to know - see if your vet will test her for it.

I wish that would work, but it happens sooo rarely (once a year maybe?).
Maybe I'll just test it next time it happens. I hate this glucometer though.:confused:

Glucose has always been normal, but we don't fast her first. Hmmm

I just have to remember to check it before feeding her.

C do you not do fasting blood work when she gets blood work done?

Nope (unless it's something like BA or triglycerides).
I might make her skip a meal which would be maybe an eight hour fast, but no, she does not get fasted.

just curious why as we humans get blood work done on fast as food can skew the test. I always do my dogs on fast as well as myself as always felt that gave a better idea of what was going on with no food involved.

I agree. It can give a better idea. But it can be interpreted according and the lab will tell the vet if it was lipemic, etc. Certainly not a bad thing to do, but not necessary either in most routine cases.

That is probably what I'd do if we went to the vet in the morning, but we usually go at night. Not going to fast her all day when her vet doesn't have a problem with me feeding her.

BTW, I don't fast for bloodwork either.

you don't? I go to an internal medicine specialist myself now lol thanks to Dexter as I pay for best insurance so might as well take advantage of it. Plus this woman is great. I really like her. She always has me do 12 fasted blood work when i get blood work. My mom is type 2 diabetes and has to get blood work all the time and her doc always says fasting too. My dh doc also always has him do fasting too.

I always schedule first thing in morning blood draw for mine. Dee Dee I have to give soloxine then blood draw has to be 4 hrs after for her hypothyroid as they have to test with soloxine in her system so that is a tricky day :(

The fasting helped to know dex had high triglycerides with no food which could be tied to why he had pancreatitis yet my other two did not. You might want to do that next time as would be interesting to see if her triglycerides were high at fast as well since she has pancreas issues

Her triglycerides were tested separately after a twelve hour fast. They were fine. Spec cPL is done fasting...when just making sure things are okay. Bile acids testing is done after a twelve hour fast also here. Her blood panels are just interpreted accordingly.

And yes, I do not fast for routine bloodwork. I've been to specialists that seem clueless compared to general practitioner, so really not into specialists here. If I can go to general, that is who I will see. She is actually an amazing doctor. They just all have their ways of doing things...

ok thanks for clarifying - interesting I will ask my doc next time about that as well. My gyno is awesome here as well she is the first woman director of our hospital which is in the top hospitals in the country for heart surgery. My dad had open heart there so i checked it out prior:( I am going to call her too as my curiosity is up about that as I have always been told to fast even with my surgery the hospital made me fast.

I was going to post the same thing! I notice when Peanut hasnt had any food in the morning he will start shaking at acting a little strange.. So when I see that I give him something to eat..Peanut doesnt eat much so its hard to tell. Sometimes he wont eat anything till like 5pm??

I wonder if I should get him tested?

have you had bats run on him to test his liver? How old is peanut?

He has had blood work done in general, I have the paper work I can look when I get home what it was.. The vet didnt say anything was abnormal..

Peanut is 3, just turned 3

3 and still gets hypoglycemia? is it alot?
