I know there is a map identifying the areas where heartworm is prevelant. California, before Katrina had no problem, but still miniscule compared to other parts of the country. But you're right, being Sacramento is a farm country, the possibility of California not spraying for mosquitoes is probably slim.

It would be best to keep her on the meds all year around.

A few weeks ago when I was still in California, I saw a truck pass by that was spraying all of the canals. Of course, they were dry by then since it hadn't rained in a while. :) But I know they do spray. Last year my sister said they came out and sprayed for a few days to control that swarm of mosquitoes. I'm just worried that during that time frame from when the mosquitoes appear to when the county sprays, my baby can get infected. I'm going to talk to her vet in California to see what he recommends and if he suggests having her on them all year long. I know in the winter time, mosquitoes disappear for a while.

I hate the idea of putting her on medication for so long, but she loves being outside. She's never outside unsupervised, but I can't protect her from tiny mosquitoes. Bathing her with Minksheen and having her wear a little dress or shirt, I don't know how else to protect her from mosquitoes. I don't know if Frontline kills them.

I hate the thought of poisons too. But, should heartworm be contracted, the alternative is a bit worse.

There is no deep frost in California, well except the Sierra Mountains. So, mosquitoes are prevelaint throughout the year. Especially where water ways are not running. They are prevelent in stagnant water. Even where water is collected in old tires, barrels, etc. If at anytime there is a gap in the heartworm meds. You will have to have your pup retested prior to putting her back on them.

I read that the treatment is antibiotics and arsenic. Antibiotics tontreat a bacteria that lives with the worm. And then arsenic. And then the risk of a worm embolism when they start dying. Scary stuff. I'm glad my baby tested negative. I might have her tested again next year to confirm. I hate having her blood drawn. They have to draw from her jugular. Yesterday she was really clingy. She was probably traumatized from the blood draw. But it had to be done.
