Can you walk a 10 week old? My baby Oliver is 10 weeks old and I'm very strict on potty training him to go outside. I take him out almost every hour and am getting him on a set schedule soon but before I could take him out and just watch him as he wouldn't run very fast or run away from me. Now it seems like he's getting faster and faster when he goes out. Heaven forbid he would run out on the street or something! I bought the smallest harness available for him with a leash but 1) I'm having trouble getting the harness on and 2) is he old enough to take on walks? Advice would be great! :aimeeyork |
Just keep practicing and if it's too big, maybe you could find one online? Way too dangerous without one... No, it's not okay to go where other strange dogs have been until one to two weeks after the last set of puppy shots (so not until 17-20 weeks). |

I would I don't know about taking him around other dogs cause of shots etc....but I do know that, I would never never! take mine out without a harness and a lead...it tooks us about 3 harness to find the one that works it a body one and the lead is the kind that goes in and out of the handle about 10foot...mine is 9months and I take him with me everyday on our walks for over hour...so they can walk maybe not so long your baby if that is what you meant, but don't even let him go off the leash to pee unless your fenced these guys are so quick he could run in the street! that is a tragedy waiting to happen. I won't even open my door till the harness and leash are on him. A week ago my friend always let her chi out in there front yard and sure enough he ran in the street and got killed, she was divestated. |
10 weeks is too early to walk around the neighborhood. His immunity isn't built up yet. You can start harness/leash training though any time. Just use it around the house, garage, yard, etc. Most of my neighbors think it's funny to see me walking Rhett up and down my driveway. But he's doing beautifully with it. He got his last set of puppy shots today, so we'll be starting longer walks in a couple of weeks. |
I can say this: I took Millie on walks (at about 13 wks) and she just did not have the energy to go very far. She would go a bit, but she just did not get down to the end of the road, like I thought she should. :) She did not really appreciate a walk until she was much older. |
Ah thanks so much guys! I live in an apartment so I don't have a backyard and I back to a lake so I refuse to take him back there since geese poop back there and I don't want him to be near that. I didn't really want to train him on puppy pads because I want him to know to go outside but is that what I should do until he gets his shots?? Thanks again :) |

Also, our vets often run puppy socialising classes where unvaccinated pups can meet in a safe place and have a good old play together. That helps them become socialised with other dogs while their movements are restricted. I'm also lucky as I have a yard to let her out in so she's done fantastically with house training. I didn't want to use the pads either, but as you have nowhere safe to take your pup where you can't guarantee that unvaccinated dogs have been, I don't see that you have a choice. Good luck. |
You mentioned something about the harness for your little puppy. I had bought a Lil' Pals harness that can be found at local pet stores and I think either Walmart or Target also sells these. This harness did not fit my puppy properly though and I was having a difficult time finding a harness that fit. I read here on Yorkie Talk about using a Ferret harness. I found this harness at a local pet store and it also comes with a matching leash. This harness fits my little yorkie perfectly! I plan to make her a few more harnesses using this harness as a pattern to design what I want for my yorkie puppy. There are a few sewing patterns available also, that can be modified to fit a puppy. The most important thing, is to make sure whatever you use for your puppy, it does not "choke" them or become too tight around their neck. |
I got Jackson at 9 weeks old and it was cold in December but I began potty training on the 2nd day he was home w/ strictly outdoors. No real walks in neighborhoods or anything. When he was young, I would just let him off leash (we live on 3 acres) because he would stay close but as he got older... I had to leash him. :) |
At 16-20 weeks your puppy will be fully vaccinated, except rabies. I wouldn't publicly display your puppy till rabies has been given. You just never know what your puppy will come in contact with even in the grass.:) |
