Is Cayanne Pepper Dangerous? My little boy is full grown yet still cannot resist the urge to chew on his harness. We take it off when not in use but sometimes need the flexibility of leaving it on (if we expect he needs to go outside urgently or something). We have gone through two harnesses already and just bought a new one that we thought would be extra tough and he got through it in two days. I sewed it back together but caught him chewing on it AGAIN. I just rubbed some cayenne pepper along the area where he tends to chew. Is there any way that this can be dangerous for dogs? I want to give him the shock of his life if he tries to chew the harness again but I certainly don't want anything bad to happen to my baby! - I figure that if it is safe than it will definitely make him not want to chew it! |
I hope not, I had places in my yard where the dogs were digging, I think for worms. I tried vinegar (killed grass), tobasco, pepper, and powdered cayenne pepper. None of that seemed to hurt the dogs. Didn't stop them either, I think I just flavored the dirt for them. I heard somewhere that you could soak a collar or leash in Listerine and let it dry and that would discourage their chewing on them. BUT, I don't know whether that is safe to do either. |
That pepper is MUCH too hot for anyone, much less for tender mouth and toungue of a tiny dog. It can cause blisters, then diarrhea. You should just teach him to leave the harness alone. |

Edit: Besides its not slathered on, theres a few specks here and there its not like we're putting buckets of this stuff in his mouth - It would certainly be more than safe for a human to lick (not that I would want to). I just wanted to know if there were any issues with cayenne pepper specifically with dogs. (like chocolate, onions, etc) |
You could rub deodorant on the harness...I've heard people doing that with things they don't want chewed. How about Bitter Apple. It worked well here when my puppies were younger and wanted to chew cords. I sprayed on all cords and they were left alone. You can get that stuff at a pet store. |
