Vet thinks my puppy may have Legg-Perthes Disease (hip joint problem) We just got back from the vet with my 8 month old yorkie and the vet thinks my puppy has Legg-Perthes Disease. My puppy has been limping - favoring her left back leg - since Thurs of last week. They took xrays today and the vet's not totally sure yet but she thinks she may have this hip joint disease. The vet gave us some pain medicine for her and she wants her to rest and then she'll see us again in 3 weeks. Does anyone have any experience with this disease or other hip issues that yorkies may have? Is surgery a must? I was surprised that this happened when she's only 8 months old but apparently that's about the age that this disease happens. Thanks in advance for any input! |
I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. I dont have any experience with this disease, however, I would not wait three weeks... I would get a second opinion from a specialist as soon as possible. |
My Widget was diagnosed with this and had surgery. He did just fine after the surgery. I think I was in more pain than he was when he came out of the surgery. It's been about a year and I am very happy with the results. He was also about 8 months when he was diagnosed. |
I don't have any advice on this but wanted to say that you should definitley seek an opinion from a board certified surgeon who is familiar with small breeds. best of luck, Hugs. |
Please, find a board certified orthopedic surgeon to take care of your baby. I did not, the first time and my little girl had to have surgery all over again because it wasn't done correctly the first time. I took her to an orthopedic surgeon the second time and what a major difference. Wish I had taken her the first time around, then she wouldn't have needed more surgery. |
