When is young too young I am purchasing a Yorkie from a breeder that I know ( a friend of a friend), she has been breeding for 15 years and I am confident she knows what she's doing. This would be my first Yorkie and I have been trying to do my research and I've read that the ideal time for a Yorkie to part with its mother is 10-12 weeks. This lady is trying to tell me that they will be ready to go to their new homes at 6 weeks!!!! I don't want to have any horror stories like she doesn't eat or crashes on me. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, ashmaemac |

I have a breeder friend that lets her yorkies go at 6 weeks also. I, on the other hand, keep my babies until at least 10 - 12 weeks and have kept some even longer. I always send my puppies home with a tube of nutrical and encourage them to give a little a couple times a day. I do know that her babies much larger than mine so that could have something to do with it. Is there some reason that she won't keep it a little longer just so you would feel more comfortable. I had a person request me keep a baby for 5 months because they were going to be out of the country. I did, but it was hard because I grew so attached to little Dottie (you can see her on my webpage) that it was very hard to part with her. Thank goodness they communicate with me all the time. If you can get her to wait a few weeks, you'd be better off. www.simplyyorkies.com |
I'm sorry but I just can't even think of letting a 6 week yorkie go. Most of the time they don't even have good teeth yet and some are still nursing. In some states its not even legal to let them go at that age. |
Please! Please! Please!!! Do not take your puppy home at 6 wks. I took my baby home at 4 mos. and she was sick when I got her. It was soo awful to see this 1 1/2 lb baby soo sick. I don't even want to think of how awful it would have been if she would have been any younger. I am telling you a 6 wk old pup is just too risky and not healthy. I would rething purchasing a puppy from somebody who is willing to let their pups go that earlier. I know you said she has been doing this for 15 yrs, but I would think by that time she would realize that is just to risky. I mean she doesn't know who she is giving these little ones too. I am not saying anything bad about you I am sure you are going to be a wonderful parent, but just think if she gave a 6 wk old to someone who couldn't afford taking care of any unforseen problems, or who didn't have the time or patients. I am sorry I am getting so upset, but I am such an animal lover. I just know how sick they can get, and their health can collapse soooo fast =(. I hear so many stories about people getting their angel, and then they get deathly ill. Just thinking about that makes my heart break. If you still plan on getting the pup I would ask the breeder if she could keep your pup a little longer...at least until he/she is one pound. I personally wouldn't take one until they were at least 1 1/2 lbs. That is just my opinon. Good luck with everything!!! |
6 weeks I disagree...if she is allowing pups to leave at 6 weeks, she does not know what she is doing. It is illegal in many states to sell before 8 weeks without the dam being sold with the puppy. If they make a law, doesn't it makes sense it is not a good idea to buy under 8 weeks at least..10 to 13 is so much better..longer for a tiny. |
Ditto!!!! I just brought home a 6 week old 2 weeks ago. I thought the breeder told me he was 8 weeks but when I went back and counted it was 6 weeks. He got really bad diahrea and he had to have IV fluids injected into him. I am very upset with the breeder for giving him to me at such a young age. It's just too much change for a dog that young. |
too young! 6 weeks is too young in my opinion! Most breeders I know keep their babies at least 'til they're 10 weeks of age. I agree with the others. Talk to the breeder about waiting a few more weeks to get the puppy from her. |
I keep my babies 12 weeks and if they are smaller than normal even longer. They get a healthy start and also gain enough weight, I dont even start weaning until 5-6 weeks. I would be careful getting one so young, how much does this 6 week old puppy weigh? A breeder friend of mine sells hers at 8 weeks but her puppies are larger than mine. |
If you really want to get troubles buy a 6 weeks old puppy . You'll see what I mean . First of all , these little ones need the mother . They are not used to eat by themselves , you'll have to bottle feed him or her . |
Consider this.............. ...............consider all the medications needed to treat any small puppy.....many medicines are toxic to anything under 2 pounds. I experienced this....my puppy was too young and too small. The medicine necessary to treat her tapeworms would likely kill her but with out the med she was going to die!!!! She was soooooooooooo sick. The vet gave her the med...divided and divied and divided into the tiniest dose he could make.....yes...she died! If the puppy can remain with mom and be healthy and NOT NEED any kind of treatment doesn't that make more sense!!! It does to me...but not to the breeder who (despite what she 'tells you') just wants to clear a bunch of puppies out and make way for the next batch.....THAT IS HOW SHE HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR 15 YEARS!!!!......... ......just because she has been doing it that way for 15 years does not mean she has been doing it right! |
Iv said this lots of times but here I go again..lol.I got Lady when she was 7 weeks old and she only weighed 8oz.I knew nothing about yorkies back then so I just assumed her tiny size was normal for a toy breed and I took her home feeling fine about her age, size etc. She´s never had a single problem and has never had special treatment for being so small etc...to me she is the same as my 9lb yorkie:) Right now she is 15 months old and weighs 2lb´s and as I said before,Iv never had a single problem with her.I think that taking a 7 week pup home is fine because in my case everything turned out ok.Some breeders dont let their pups go until 12 weeks, and I totally respect that.I think that the age you can take a pup home doesnt depend on the new owner,it depends on weather the breeder is willing to let it go or not. |
