Best treats for liver disease
 
In January our Yorkie was diagnosed with liver disease (no shunt) and our vet started her on the dry L/D Science Diet. She loved it and improved so much and gained weight. He re-tested her blood and, after antibiotics, her numbers came down to normal. She then decided she didn't like her dry food anymore, so we re-tested her, #'s were up, another round of antibiotics, and I started mixing L/D canned with the dry and she be-grudgingly eats it (only because our Sheltie stands right there after he's gobbled his food down, to maybe get one of her left-over morsels). We did have her blood re-tested in May and her numbers were back up, but she's acting pretty good. Just wonder what else I could be doing to impove her liver problems and what "treats" others out there feed their Yorkies with liver disease. There is so much offered on the market, but I know a lot of those bones and treats are not good for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I try to feed natural treats and nothing that is meat based.

I feed the fruit or veggie treats from here, as well as the PB bones and the apple pie bones:

the sweet potato chews are my kids favorites.

I also feed fresh fruits and veggies for treats.

I feed yorkie yummies from chattiesmom in the carrot and banana flavors.

I sometimes will give zukes minis in PB flavor, or the buddy biscuit soft chews in PB... but I rarely give these, I prefer the things made by YT members because I think they care more about my dogs health then some big corporation and I know they arent sticking anything bad in them. ;)

Thank you, I will definitely check out that website. If anyone else has other suggestions for improving her liver function, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I'm reading a lot on this forum, but sometimes I can't keep up-to-date with new ideas.

At least our baby doesn't have a diabetic problem; it sounds like vegetables and fruits are a good idea.

Lucy loves cooked carrots mixed in with her food. I also found some yogurt treats; but she seems to have grown tired of them.

Right now, she is eating a Vegetarian kibble . . but she hates it and I worry that she is not eating enough. Doesn't seem to matter what I mix it with.

One dry food she always loved and did well on . .. PURINA PUPPY CHOW. I know that is not a good food; but she never had any problems on it . . I didn't have to mix it with meat/veggies/potato . . whatever . . to get her to eat it.

She likes cheerios for a treat and sometimes apple.

Thanks for the suggestions; these little ones are just so picky; about the time you think you have them figured out, they change their eating habits! I do have good luck with a couple spoolfuls of low fat cottage cheese at night her her "treat" while we have our treats. She loves it, but doesn't like it mixed with her food - just on its own.

I completely understand what you're going through Becca. We had the same problem with Kozmo. We were so worried he had a liver shunt because his numbers kept coming back high. Our vet put him on the canned science diet as well because he is so small we were afraid the dry food was too big. They told me to get the science diet treats for him. He wasn't crazy about the food or the treats,but we didn't have much of a choice. After a bunch of retesting we finally had an ultrasound and that proved he was fine. The food made his levels go down and now he is back to his normal Eukenuba. As to what caused his levels to go up in the first place is still a mystery.

You are so lucky that your baby's levels went down and are able to be back on Euk. We've fed that for years (and our Sheltie is still on it); but we've had to keep our Lexie on the dry (and now wet mixed in) Science Diet L/D; her numbers have been up and down; however, she's feeling better, but our vet said the next step will be a liver biopsy to maybe rule some things out. From what I hear on this website, liver issues seem to be a problem with Yorkies. We had two previous Yorkies with no health issues, so have been surprised to have this problem with our Lexie. She's 3 years old now, and every day that is a good day for her, is a good day for us! :)

I know how worried you are, we pretty much made ourselves sick we worried so much. We are very grateful that we had such a great outcome with Kozmo. I have read the same thing. Liver shunts seem to be a problem in yorkies. Kozmo's numbers went down on the Science Diet L/D. Then back up when we took him off of it. Luckily his last test was good and we were finally able to do the ultrasound and have him neutered. I will be praying for you and little Lexie.:love: Keep me posted on how she's doing.
