Benadryl for dogs My baby, Bella, has allergies. Such as watery eyes, sneezing, shortness of breath. The vet said to try out benadryl with her, the childrens kind. The only childrens kind I found was liquid.... Bella will NOT take it. She won't let me put any syringe in her mouth... I thought I could trick her into licking the medicine up, but that didn't work either. So I found the tablet benadryl, but it isn't for kids. It's 25 mg each tablet. I know that is too much for her since she only weighs 5 lbs. Has anyone else ever had to give their dogs benadryl due to allergies such as sneezing, watery eyes, etc? Needless to say she hasn't had any of the benadryl yet, and honestly I'm some what scared to give it to her. Any suggestions or advice or personal experience? Thank you! |
Also, I shouldn't say Bella is a baby. She is 1 year 4 months... but still my baby. :) |
Bump!! I'm sorry I have no advice for you. |

The other thing that I have done since sometimes they fear things coming "at them" is to sit them on my lap with their faces turned away from me. I then can bring a syringe up to their mouths without them seeing it coming. The ones I have given liquid Benadryl to have really liked the flavor...perhaps if you try this you might get some in her mouth long enough for her to enjoy the flavor. |
Bella gets oral (liquid) meds every other day. I put my left hand on top of her snout and my thumb and middle finger go into her mouth to keep it propped open. Then I put the syringe into her mouth - only a little bit, don't put it down her throat. Tip the head back slightly so the meds don't fall out. Give it slowly, don't just thrust it in and make the dog gag. Don't make it a horrible experience and your dog may get used to it. Maybe give a small treat afterwards. |
Thank you, all! I will try those methods first with the liquid! If it still doesn't go well, I'll also consult my vet today about the tablets. Yes, 5 mg is what the vet said. Tablets would be easier because I could hide those in her treats, but if it's too high of dose then I wouldn't want to do that. Thank you for the info! :) |
not sure how much 5mg equates to teaspoon size as I have never had to give it, but could you mix it in something like a bit of plain yogurt? |

one teaspoon in the liquid form; which is 5ml has 12.5mg so if u need 5mg; that will be 2ml of the liquid good luck |
We've used benadryl for Daisy in the past. She is 8 lbs and her dose was 1/4 of a 25mg tablet. Dogs need alot more benadryl than we do which is why the dose seems high. As LadyJane said, double check the dose with your vet. You could wrap the pill in a piece of chicken....in our house, pills inside of pieces of chicken or banana gets the pill down with no effort. Very rarely have I seen a spit out of a pill when it involves chicken. I hope the benadryl works for you. It did nothing for us! |
