Ant traps?

We always get little black ants in one spot in the kitchen during the summer months. I usually put out RAID ant traps in a few spots, but this year we have Roxie, and I don't want to put out anything that could possibly hurt her. Is it safe to use the same ant traps, or is there something specifically "dog friendly" that I should use?

I'm not sure about those. How about spraying around your house or inside? There's something that our pest control company uses that is super safe for animals and humans if you come in contact w/it yet lethal to bugs.

if you know where they are getting into the house you can put a little pile of cornmeal outside. the ants will pick it up and bring it back to the nest for everyone to eat. the cornmeal expends in their stomach and they cannot digest it so it kills them. cornmeal is safe for kids and pets. i'd just sprinkle it around outside where you see ant hills and you can sprinkle some on the counter or corner where the ants go. it takes a few days for them to take it back, eat it, and die i think.

I will not use chems around my house or yard. White Vineger is good. Another great product is ECOSMART ORGANIC INSECTICIDE. You can buy this at Lowes. Smells like Eucalyptus. Its for Ants and Roaches. Plant based. Good Luck.

There are other alternatives.

You say it's only one spot in the kitchen. Can you trace where they are coming in? Usually, its through outlets/light switches or around the pipes under the sink. You can seal off these openings.

Ants also won't cross certain barriers. Borax is a common one, but it isn't safe around animals. You can use ground up chalk, Cinnamon or even cayenne pepper as alternatives.

If they are coming in through the windowsill, my grandmother used to put oil of citronella on a cotton ball and placed that inside a bottle cap on the sill. Worked every time.

I like the idea of using citronella oil. It says not to ingest it. Does this mean it wouldn't be safe to put on the windows?

As long as the window sills are up out of the dogs reach why wouldn't it be ok? I have some that are low, so I put the cotton ball between the window and the screen so the dogs can't get to them. Make sure it's the oil of citronella you buy in health food stores and not the kind you burn in the torches.

I have used the Raid ant baits around my animals for years now. (I have 3 cats & a Yorkie.) I have always considered them safe because the poison is inside of the little house compartment where it can't be reached. Of course, just to be safe, I place them where they will not be played with or really even touched by the animals at all.....on windowsills, etc. The bad news is that I have found them to be only mildly successful in controlling the ants! Perhaps some of the other remedies suggested will work out better for you?

if your talking about the little plastic ones then i would be scared to use those. even if the insecticide is inside the little compartment, its just plastic and a lot of dogs like to chew. it wouldn't take them long to chew thru it or on it even to puncture the compartment and get to the poison. better safe then sorry here. it doesn't take much to kill our little yorkies...

I did find one on eBay that is 100% essential citronella oil. We're going to try it. She cnant reach the window sill I was just wondering.

I tired that ECOSMART Organic Insecticide....boy did it stink!!!!! We had to air the whole house out and it's still lingering!!! Hopefully those ants stay far far away!! haha
