How often do you get your pups teeth scaled? Scruffy just hit the 2 year mark in April and we took him to the vet for his annual check up. They recommeded that we get him in for a professional dental cleaning because there was some serious tartar buildup and one of his teeth were loose (one of the tiny ones on the upper side of his mouth). I've always had a hell of a time brushing his teeth, so I have at least gotten the brush over them and some tooth paste in his mouth. Just got new treats to help with the tartar control too "Virbac Chews for Dogs". And he does only eat dry dog food. But how often does everyone acutally get the scaling? Should I schedule it as soon as possible like the vet recommends? |
Did you ask the vet how often it's recommended? I just had Kaji's teeth cleaned a few months ago. Still pearly white! The vet that did it wants to see him in 6 months. I don't know if it's for a check up on his teeth or for another full on cleaning. |
It really depends on each individual dog, their genetics and their diet. Some teeth go bad quickly and may need more frequent cleaning, where a lucky few in the Yorkie World can go longer. I follow my vet's recommendations. |
Okay. Thanks. Has anyone else had a problem getting their yorkie to adapt to teeth brushing? I should have been more diligent with it when he was young, but started trying every night for the past 6 months. He still hates me for it. |

There really shouldn't be a time frame put on this because all dogs are so different. Ellie had horrible teeth. She had oral surgery and now we do homecare. So the annual rule doesn't apply to her. We will be approaching three years with no cleaning and she doesn't need one. Her vet is extremely happy with her teeth and gums. And some dogs could start looking like they need one every 3-6 months. Your vet should make the call. If your vet said it's time to do it, then it can be unsafe to wait because of the bacterial concerns. |
Thanks. It's so expensive! But anything for scruffy. |

I just had Cali who turns 5 next months teeth cleaned Monday. She will not let me brush her teeth. She has mild MVD so the vet only will put her under if absolutely necessary. She had retained 4 baby teeth and 2 were canine's and food was getting trapped so they were getting bad looking. I don't think she will need another cleaning for a few years. My Pixie has terrible teeth and gingivitis. She is 4 and has had 2 cleanings and 7 adult teeth pulled. Even with brushing them they go bad fast. So I think she will need yearly cleanings. My vet puts them on antibiotics 3 days prior and 4 after. It is expensive. With blood work it ends up about 325.00 each time. |

if there are loose teeth then get it done NOW usually the teeth to the side of it are affected as well. My demi lost 27 teeth because i waited and tried petzlife gel. As soon as i saw a loose tooth i freaked and took her to a board certified dentist and she had periodontal disease. Her tartar did not look that bad but once i felt a loose tooth within 2 weeks she had 10 loose teeth as the bone to tooth ratio is small in small dogs and the periodontal disease can spread quickly as I saw :( I did two consults, blood work and urine and in that two week time finding a dentist she went from one loose tooth to ten to 27 being removed. I still feel horrible about it as i should have had her in sooner for a dental:( |
