My daughters dog has heartworm Well my daughter took her siberian husky in for an infected spot on her leg and for her shots and ended up finding out that she has heartworm. She is going to start her treatments on Wednesday and has to stay there for three days. Has anyone ever had to go through this? It is really scary but we are saying our prays and hoping that things will go well. |
My rescue, Sweet Sophie, came to me with heartworms. She came through with shining colors! I hope your daughters baby does as well! |
Some of the pups that are with YHR have been HW positive and treated successfully. It can be very stressful on them during treatment. Maybe Ladyjane will come along and give you a better response. I guess this would be a good time to remind everyone to make sure to use HW preventative with the summer coming up so quickly. :) |
My male IG, Monty had heartworm. The important thing is to keep the dog inactive after treatment. Not hard with Monty, he just wanted to hide in the crate all the time, but a younger, active dog might be more difficult to keep quiet. I hope all goes well with your daughter's dog. |

We used to do dog rescue, and we had two dogs with heartworm. Both dogs were mixed breed adults. Both dogs lived for many years after their treatment and died of unrelated causes. The first dog had the full treatment, had to be kept in a crate, and had to go to the ER twice. It was expensive and really unpleasant. The second dog had a very different experience. It was a female with liver problems so the regular heartworm treatment was contraindicated. So the veterinarian said we should just keep her on heartworm medicine and that eventually the heartworms wold die off, just more slowly, and there would be less risk and no new heartworms would be born. We did that because we had no choice, but it was actually much easier on us and on the dog. It was cheaper, no visits to the ER, and we didn't have to keep her in a crate. Her case may have been less severe than the first dog's case. Good luck. |
One last thought -- there used to be two kinds of heartworm treatment, the really expensive one and the cheap one. I do not recall which one we used for the full treament. The expensive one is supposed to be less risky. I hope all goes well. |
