Raw hides, Booda corn starch treats Does anyone give their yorkie raw hide chews or pig twists? My pup loves them and I usually throw them away before she actually swallows any pieces but sometimes she does get a bite. She is 14 months and under 4 lbs. Now my friends tells me they are too too dangerous. Well she eats a greenie in about 15 minutes and is looking for more to chew on. I bought a Booda corn starch treat and the vet so no to it too due to undigestabel ingredients. Help- what can I give her ? |
I give the grounded rawhide chews that way if they digest it its little digestable pieces. My dogs have never had a problem with them. I give them the bigger rawhide occasionally. |
I was shopping in Petcetera and a lady who works in the store saw me picking up a rawhide with my yorkie. She told me rawhides are not good for them. It might cause stomache problems. She suggested getting chewy items that made of natural ingredients (such as bully sticks). My puppy is teething and he likes to chew. I've bought so many types of chewing stuff for him, some he likes, some he doesn't. Anybody tried pig ears/pig twist(made of pig intestines). Any suggestions anybody? |
I havent tried them yet but I am thinking of getting them for my dogs. They have them in the fosters and smith catalog. I just think it is like anything else you should watch your dog when they have them and when they are getting too chewed up they need to be taken away. |
Gracie and Boodah love the Banana flavored HEALTHY EDIBLES NYLABONE'S ingredients: Potato starch, calcium carbonate, natural banana flavor, natural color, soy flour, lecithin, rosemary oil They chew on one for anywhere from 1-3 weeks and they are completely edible................. I get mine at Petsmart |
I never give mine any type of rawhide or cornstarch bones.........bad results |
I get the thick rolled up rawhides. Poor Winston will work on it until he can almost get a bit and I'd take it away, cut the soft-piece off with a scissor. He just keeps on chewing.... LOL |
I had always used rawhides and the compressed rawhides with my 14 pound poodle mix, Gizmo. Then I got my Biewer Yorkie, Lilly, and continued to use them, but threw out the peices once they got small. Then one night Gizmo got real sick and I found large pieces of rawhide. I guess in his rush to make sure that Lilly didn't steal it from him, he actually ate it. So, every piece of rawhide and compressed rawhide was thrown out. Now I just buy the actual smoked bones from Petco. They last until you decide to throw them out and yet they will sit there and chew on them for hours. I have seen quite a few posts regarding how bad rawhides are, but none about the smoked bones.....if you all know of any reasons I shouldn't be giving these to them, please be sure to tell me! Thanks! |
We give the bully sticks here. They can chew on those forever! I've heard people recommend the tendons but I haven't found those yet. |
I give Thor rawhide which he loves. He really can't do too much damage to one. It takes him forever to chew one up, and then I take it away when it gets too small. He perfers the small twists, the size of a pen. Also he LOVES pig ears! Those are really great. They keep him entertained for hours and hours and I havent heard anything bad about them . Hannah |
what's wrong with feeding them the cornstarch velvets???? Tigger loves them and I heard they're better for them. did I hear wrong???? I will only give Tigger compressed rawhide. |
greenies my mother in law recently sent me an article about greenies. it was a news story about dogs who had to have operations to get greenie parts removed from their intestines. aparently they swell up inside the dog, getting trapped and causing bowel obstructions and sometimes death. we were horrified! jack ate them all the time- they were his favorite, but no more. we're trying to find a good substitute. jaximus |
I asked my vet and he recommended "Meaty Bones Chew-a-lotta...Marley is only 3 1/2 pounds but i buy the big dog bone and he just sits there for hours licking it and scraping it with his teeth, i havent experienced any problems...and it's to hard to chew easily he's really gotta naw at it! |
I have heard lots of bad things about rawhide, it swells up in their stomach, they say you can put it in water overnight and it will swell up. I still give my guy greenies just small pieces and not every day since all the stuff about greenies. |

Hi Jen I give these smoked bones to my Tango too (haven't got one for Gypsy yet but I'm going to) He absolutely loves them! The only thing I have noticed is that if he's had one for a long time he can wear them down til they're quite sharp around the edge. One time I noticed a little blood on the bone so I think he was actually cutting his little gums a bit. So now I just keep an eye on them and if they get too sharp I just chuck it and give him a new one. Kathy, Tango and Gypsy |
