Question for those of you who home cook for your pets Hi, I have an 8 lbs yorkie, and I'm thinking about homecooking for her. She's on a raw diet now, but to be honest, she doesn't seem to enjoy it, and that bothers me. I've been hearing great things about homecooking, and of course she loves human food, so I'm sure she'll take to it quickly. But I have a question for those of you who homecook. How is their poop? I've always heard the smaller their poop, the more nutrition their getting from their food. A while back I cooked for her, chicken, green beans, carrots, broccoli and brown rice, she loved it. But what came out of her surprised me, it was huge. I only feed her that way for one day, so I don't know if things would have changed later. But I do wonder if she received any nutritional value from that meal. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and to know how you yorkies are doing on a homecook diet Thanks |
I'm curious too....I do it once in a while, but not consistently for my babies. |
The things I cook up, mix and freeze is quite a process. It isn't simple, but another person cooks up bison, green beans, squash, carrots, wild rice, sweet potatoes & barley then puts in a food processer to grind very, very fine, measures out what one dog would eat at a meal, freezes then puts them in a zip-loc freezer bag. Just add Omega 3 &6 fatty acid and some type of vitamin. I make the Healthy Powder from Dr. Pitcairn's book. |

Poop on homecooked varies by dog and by the recipe used. Ellie didn't really change in that area when we went from kibble to homecooked. Now, after needing a unique homecooked diet for medical reasons, her poop is just not good. You can always add or take away fiber to get the desired consistency. Homecooking should usually be done under the oversight of a veterinary nutritionist, or if using a recipe that you found, it should meet AAFCO guidelines for the lifestage of your dog. |
I rotate thier food chix ,bishon or salmon for starch sweet potatos organic or steel cut oats I always use flax seed and vegis can be spinich, carrots, kale, black beans or green beans and i did not relize it but yes thier turd is very small thier coats are thick and it shines |
I've home cooked for my pups since they were babies. All three eat different diets due to some medical issues so their poops vary in size. Without a doubt, the poops are not nearly as gross as when they eat dog food. They are not smelly either. Daisy eats a diet that is high in fiber and her poops are kind of medium sized and look a little less firm Barney's (he has much less fiber in the diet). Then there is Teddy - he has firm small nuggets - they look like rabbit poops half the time. His diet is chicken and brown rice with veggies. If you're thinking about home cooking, Dr. Remillard (a vet nutritionist in Boston) has a website where you can buy a diet formulated for your dog for about $25. If your dog has medical issues, you can't use the site. It's Welcome to Pet Diets Good Luck! |
Thanks Everyone Thanks Everyone for your feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Quote:

MSU has a nutritionist department at their vet schook and they probably do homemade diets. When I had went to their site to see about it, the information was just not laid out the way I like to see it (not enough contact info and details about consults). I use Dr. Remillard also. |

I can't wait until we move to Ohio and maybe I can find a veterinary nutritionist. I am trying Lucy on the vegetarian food and she is not liking it so much. Right now, I'm grinding it into a fine 'dust' and trying to mix it with other things. But I can tell this is probably not our long-term food. Maybe homecooking is in my future. If not for my family, then at least for my dog! |

There is no better or safer way to feed your dog or cat than the all natural way. Commercial pet food is NOT natural by a long shot. Here is some information about AAFCO. Do you think they care about our pets? WHO REGULATES THE PET FOOD INDUSTRY |
