Protein C test Question for anyone that has had this test ran or has knowledge about it. My little liver dog had high bile acids on a test about a year ago and we have managed it with diet, antibiotics and supplements since April of last year. In the last month she has had 2 seizures. So at this point we did the protein C test and I am a little confused about the results. I am told that the normal range is 75 to 135%, her results were 93% and according to Cornell and my vet it indicates MVD. This is what we have been treating her for. Now they think she could have 2 separate issues, maybe a nero problem also, she has lost the ability for her right eye to dialate properly. We are going to re-test her bile acids next week. What are others knowledge about the protein C test and any experiences with those that have had it ran. Thanks for your input |
can you give us more information what were the number of the bats? what are you feeding and what meds are you giving? how old is your dog? |
She started having problems at 3 years old, she is 4 1/2 now. She eats Royal Canine Hepatic LS 14, takes lactulose, clavmox and metro...(don't know spelling) for preventive antibiotics and denosyl for her liver. Her bile acids a year ago were 116. We are going to do a complete blood panel on Monday for an over all check and re-test the bile acids. |

are you consulting with dr centers? are you on any of the liver shunt groups? |
We are retesting Bile acids on Monday to see where she is now. I have been on the Liver support site, but not recently. My vet is conferring with a vet in Little Rock that does the liver shunt surgery, she suggested the re test and to use a different antibiotic neomicin and to do a possible CT scan to look for any nero problems. They also said that she could quite possibly be MVD and not a candidate for surgery. The only way to tell if it is a shunt would be for the porto gram or a special x-ray like the one at UT. |

I would have her consult dr tobias and dr center as they are the experts on this and if I was considering further testing it would be scintigraphy but that is only going to say shunt or no shunt not if multiple or not. Only way to know if multiple is by opening the dog up. Did your vet ever retest after original bats to make sure the number went down below 100 after doing low protein and supplements? Usually if mvd the number is below 100 usually if over 100 a shunt but your dogs is barely over 100 so this is a tough one. I have seen a dog on here who had a protein c test and it said like yours no shunt and the dog had 4 shunts when tobias opened him up. I think you will know more once the bats come back. How about urine any crystals in urine? The seizures has me concerned as my dog has mvd but it is a very mild case of it so she has never had any symptoms and is on low protein diet only no supplements |
the dog with the multiple shunts and had protein c test was 4 years old His protein c test was done at Texas A & M not Cornell though - where was your dogs protein C test done? |

My Roxy's first BAT was 100.9 and since being on a special low, but quality protein and liver aid supplements, her BAT has come down to the 60 to 80 range. Her Protein C test was 165% and she shows no symptoms. Has your Vet recommended giving her more Lactulose to rid the toxins that are building up and possibly causing the seizures? Have you seen an Internal Medicine Specialist yet? |
She has been on the lactulose for a year. Dr. Naaf in Little Rock is an internist and has made the latest suggestions on retesting the bile acids and doing a routine blood work up to see if it shows any other problems, such as kidney or other problems. The seizures are a new thing very recent and may or may not be related to her liver issues. That is what we are trying to find out. Dr. Naaf also said that she may not be a surgery candidate. Up until 3 years of age she showed no signs what so ever. She was a very healthy spunky little dog until then. That was 18 months ago and the vet then wouldn't test for liver shunt, that is why after him and a holistic vet I went to the one that I am using now to test the bile acids. Everyone of them thought it was nero and not liver related. They were all surprised when she had elevated bile acids. Thanks |
