Brick & Concrete Licking Our Yorkie is 1 1/2 years old and is wide open, but a lot of fun. The one quirk that we cannot understand is when he is excited he licks brick and concrete constantly. We are trying to stop him but so far we have failed. What causes this and what can we do to stop him. He licks until foam covers his lips but he just keeps going. Need help. |
Welcome. I have 2 that lick the carpet and i have no idea why. Can you keep him off the concrete and brick and only let him on it when he is on a leash. Maybe your vet can give help you find out why. |
I have heard that licking/eating rocks is sometimes is seen with terriers. Be glad your baby isn't eating them! I had a jack russell terrier that ate fine jewelry! Including a 3 quarter karat diamond pendant, an ankle bracelet and a silver Tiffany heart charm !!! |
Mine likes to lick the walls.. and the wood outside. He is getting better about the wood outside, we keep him on a leash and just yell no licky! and gently pull him away. |
I'll bump this up for you. Hope someone can help you.:) |

Chloe doesn't lick concrete but she does love to play with pieces of gravel. She'll sneak them in with her when we come in from going potty. So far she's never eaten one (that I know of), but she tosses them around in the air and chases them down. She did used to lick the walls, but I've about got her broken of that. If you're able to figure out why he's doing it, let us know! I'm curious. :) -C |
Wish I knew the answer. My Betty Boop licks and bites our fireplace bricks and mortar. Somehow she can get concrete pieces and eats them. I'm glad to know about the calcium thing. I'm going to call my vet next week and ask him about this. BTW, she licks carpet, too. |

Bailey licks walls. |
George licks and bites the edge of the concrete around the fire box, he started when he was teething and thought that was why, I always used to put a chewy in his mouth to give him something better thinking the concrete might cause damage to his little mouth, but now at 17 months he still does it when I'm not looking (he knows I dont like it) I think it's just a boredom thing now or something to tease me with:rolleyes: |
P.S he's started licking the cats tail now, not sure which is safer!!!!!;) |

I saw a episode on dog whispers (Cesar Milan) about a dog who eat rocks and was very obsessed with them, he took the dog for a exercise every day and re-direct his obsession, with somenthing else, if I remember I think with a ball and have play with other dogs. Melody like to lick the car seats:rolleyes: is made of suede and I don't know why she does it sometimes not all the time, she is the only one that does that, you should, ck your dog at the vet to make sure there is no deficiency on the diet, just like the other poster suggested, Shayna chewed the corners of the window (wood by the door) and the corner close to the doors, but she did it out of frustration, when she didn't want us to leave her behind, was very sad, thank God that she don't do it anymore, when I saw her doing it I just told her, NO; with this babies you never know:rolleyes: |
Its good to know its not just our Kenzie who enjoys eating/licking that kind of stuff. Called the vet and she told us its minerals/vitamins deficiency like you said, she told us to give 1/2 tablet of Bayer's Equilibrium green label to Kenzie everyday. She isn't enjoying the taste so we will need to think about a good way to make her take it. |
