Eating poo Help! While I'm at work my little furbaby stays in the kitchen in an x-pen and has her crate, a pee pad, food, water, toys etc. She goes pee on the pad without a problem, but I think she's been eating her poo because when I come home I find only a few small pieces of it in the area. I've occasionally caught her doing the same thing if she has an accident in the living room on the rug. I have someone come to the house twice a day to let her out and play, etc. However, he left me a note yesterday saying that she pooped in her crate. I thought they never pooped where they slept? What can I do to stop this from happening if I'm not home? :( |
How old is your baby? |
She's 6 months old. She used to be in her crate all day except when the dog sitter came. We then decided to let her be in the kitchen with her crate but inside an x-pen. She didn't really have any trouble going pee on the pee pads, but it looks like there are signs that she's pooping on them and then eating it.:( |
Pineapple has worked for some. It tastes good and makes their poo taste horrible. What food is your puppy on? Some low quality foods taste the same going in as they do once they come out. It can also be that she's not getting the nutrients she needs from her food and in an attempt to get what she needs, she's "re-processing" the food. Gross I know, but that's all I can think of as possible causes. |
She eats Royal Canin YT puppy and I also give her some Natural Balance beef food roll with each meal. Wouldn't the pineapple cause her to have diarrhea? |
In a 6 month old pup I'm not sure. My boy eats fresh fruits and veggies all the time with no diarrhea, but then again it's only given to him as treats and in teeny portions. From this site Dog Food Reviews - 5 Star Premium Dry Food - Powered by ReviewPost it seems Royal Canin isn't the best quality food, and Natural Balance is a so-so food. |
Thanks for all your advice. I think I'll see about getting some samples of better dry foods and I'll try to start offering some fruits as treats and see how things go. Thanks again. |

One of the biggest issues with eating poo is that you're puppy might not be digesting all of the nutrients in the food. One of the best way to combat this is to add Digestive Enzymes into the food, I use Great Life. Another good one is Solid Gold Seameal Adding pineapple or other supplements like stop eating poop in some cases fixes the symptom, but not the root cause of the issue. Another cause can be that your puppy has worms in the stool, and that's what it's eating. If you can watch him poo, look at the stool. If worms are present I would recommend adding some Diatomaceous Earth to his diet for a few days. |
Thanks. I'll check into the supplements, etc. Her poop doesn't look like it has worms in it and she doesn't touch it when she poops outside. She'll be going to the vet next week to be spayed and microchipped so I'll talk with the vet too. Thanks all! |
