Snorting/Sneezing Noise...new mom please help :) Okay so I am a first time new mommy to a beautiful 8 month old female yorkie baby. I have only had her for about two weeks now but I have noticed that when she is playing and gets really excited she will constantly make this sort of sneezing snorting sound. It's not a reverse sneeze she is blowing air out her nose. I thought about a collapsing trachea but I only walk her on a harness and she does not do this when we are walking or running which we do 3 or 4 times a day. I asked the old owner and they said they thought she just had allergies. The said she had her first shots and has been examined by a vet they don't have the paperwork but have directed me to the vet where I can get it (and plan to do so). She does do it occasionally when were just relaxing but it is really a lot when we are playing and she is getting worked up. She doesn't bark and only growls when trying to get me to play tug of war with her. Is this something I should be concerned and see the vet for or is this a common thing to this breed? I have looked up EVERYTHING I can about this breed and haven't found this mentioned anywhere except the trachea problems. Thanks in advance!! |

How do you know for sure its not a reverse sneeze? Thats what it sounds like to me. My Peanut does the same thing. Esp when he is playing hard or gets really excited fast. When he does it air does come out of his nose and his mouth is kinda open... I will usually just rub his throat up and down and it will calm him down and it will stop. |
I'm not, I just assume (bad thing to do i know) that reverse sneezing would be air going in not out. |

I know if you go on youtube.com and type in reverse sneeze you can hear some of the dogs that do it, that might help you  Im pretty sure thats what your baby is doing, it sounds like it and its tooooo common for these little guys! |
Maybe this can help. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...d-trachea.html |
I watched a few of the videos, they all make a gagging sound before hand where as lulu sounds more like a repeated sneeze without the gagging her head shakes I don't ever hear her suck in air just push it out but i will keep a closer eye, I don't think thats it though .....it is very hard to explain I know, very frustrating too....thank you. |

If you can I would try to video tape her doing it and when you take her in to the Vet play it for him so he can hear and see  Peanut doesnt make a "gagging" noise either. |
I watched these videos thank you...after watcing them I actually feel better about lulu's noise it doesn't sound as bad or scary as any of those, it's totally nasal air blow but it happens one right after the other when shes really worked up just like a sneeze I'll try to get videos of it myself. thanks so much for the links |
Okay so I have been watching extra close all night and today and I don't think she is sneezing either. What she does is blows air out her nose in a short quick burst as if something was tickling it or something like that but she does it quite often. When shes in my lap and playing with my hand I can feel a burst of air come out of her nose when she does it. There is nothing before it and only a little head shake after she does it sometimes. Its really quiet no noise other than the sound of air blowing out her nose. I don't know if this is a serious problem or just a quirk she has. |
my hammer seems to do something like that. He does it when he is trying to get my attention. To me it sounds like a regular sneeze. He usually only does it right before a little bark comes out. I just assumed it was his way of getting worked up and excited to play. |
Thanks for posting that link to the videos! The sounds are very accurate from my experience. |
My dog has done a little bit of the gagging/coughing thing before but this morning it was really bad. I have to wonder if its the CT. I watched the videos and he sounds more like the reverse sneezing but he also sounds like the second CT video :( It almost sounds as if he is choking. I used to use a collar on him up until he was about 7 months old (I wasn't aware of the need for a harness) but I've used a harness since. He is now 9 months old about 15.5 lbs and a Yorkie/Doxie mix. Do you think it could be the CT? I was just so worried this morning because he has never been this bad. Why all of a sudden is it worse? |
