Lulu is sick and vet doesn't know why
 
I am very worried and confused. Lulu started vomiting three days ago, it was a yellow fluid and foamy. When we try to feed her dog food, she gags and vomits, and she even went into a seizure, fell over on her back and was shaking. We took her to the vet immediately and they took x rays and drew blood. They said she had a lot of air in her stomach and they put a tube down her throat to remove the air. The blood tests showed her white blood cell count is high, meaning she has an infection some where, not sure where. They put her on two different antibiotics. She is still not acting right, she drinks a lot of water and belches. She seems to be ok eating baby food, but she seems to be in pain, shaking and panting. The vet said maybe she has something in her esophagus, but they are not sure, they referred us to another vet, which we will bring her tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their dog.

Sorry to hear Lulu is sick. Has she had and bloody vomit or diaharea? Is the new vet a specialist? I am hoping they can find out what is causing her to be sick and get her back to normal. Please keep us posted.

How old is she?

was it dry or wet food?

megaesophagus comes to mind

Megaesophagus in Dogs

but the seizure has me confused as that can be liver or hypoglycemic related in a young dog.

are they referring you to a specialty hospital where there is an internal medicine specialist and neurologist?

what exact tests were run thus far?

Did they xray her esophagus?

Lulu is 4 yrs old. She was eating both dry and frozen raw food. We took her to our vet yesterday for a second opinion, they took more x rays with a barium that she swallowed, and it looks like her esophagus has some narrowing and inflamation. They don't think she had seizures, but she fainted from gagging and not getting air. They put her on steroids and referred us to the same specialist that we are going to today. It is a vet that specializizes in internal medecine. Our vet said they will either do an ultra sound or an endoscopy. I am hoping for ultra sound. We are still waiting for blood results for valley fever, which is a possibility, the vet also mentioned cancer, but she seems very young for that. Have you dealt with megaesophagus? Is that treatable?

My family lived in AZ and my father had valley fever. I never thought of dogs having it.

Sounds like Lulu is in good hands. Hope you have answers soon.

I hope the new vet can pinpoint what is wrong with Lulu ASAP. Praying for her recovery. Keep us updated on what the internist has to say.

no my demi was regurgitating water and food a few weeks ago but just turns out to have been sour stomach but i read up on it as i called hospital and they said regurgitation is tied to esophagus issues. It is when the water or food comes up with no effort just shoots back out like happens to her when she gulps water. She is fine and has done it a few times since when she gulps water but not like the two other times when it was like a volcano. She does not like to drink water unless it is fresh so when we rotate water she gulps down a bunch so i rotate water more now.

I thought megaesophagus was only in puppies but learned it can happen to older dogs too.

Sounds like she is in the best hands with ims so I hope you get some answers soon

I do know someone on my allergy group whose dog has valley fever so if it turns out to be that she will help you and will email back and forth with you and she is sharp but hopefully that is not what is going on. I do know it is treated with steroids. My grandma lives in arizona and she has a yorkie so i am aware that valley fever is an issue in desert areas.

We brought Lulu home today. It turns out she had a piece of potato stuck in her esophagus. Unfortunately she developed ulcers around the potato, so we really need to watch her for the next few weeks. The vet feels confident that she will heal up completely. Thank you to everyone who wrote in and was concerned for Lulu.

At one time it was felt every human and dog had valley fever at one time if you lived in AZ long enough...especially when the state was on fire with building new homes...as VG came from spores being dug up ..

I had a number of dogs come through rescue with Valley Fever...very treatable ..just takes time..VF will require treatment with an anti-fungal medication.
