Anal glands I'm not sure where I read something about this, most likely somewhere on here, but I've never heard about expressing anal glands before. Is this something you have to do with all dogs or just Yorkies? How often do you need to do it and how do you know it needs to be done? We had a tiny poodle (4 pounds) before, and I'd never heard anything about it. Maybe she had it done at the groomer or the vets, but wouldn't they have mentioned it? It doesn't sound like something pleasant to do. But if it's something that has to be done, I'd do it, but I'm afraid I'd end up hurting Charlie. I'm not squeamish but I'm always afraid of hurting them. (Even when my kids were infants, I could never take their temperature rectally or syringe their nose when they had a cold. Not because I thought it was icky but I was so scared of hurting them.) Thanks for any advice. This is such a great site. I was just thinking how awesome it would have been to have something like this when my kids, especially the first, was an infant! |
This is not something you want to start to do. They should express their own anal glands when they potty. A symptom of their being full is usually dragging their behinds on the floor.:D Don't rush out to get their anal glands expressed though, because they should be able to empty them on their own. Once a vet starts this they usually won't be able to empty them on their own. Just leave well enough alone is my motto. Also, someone who doesn't know what they're doing can damage them. |
I'm not 100% sure about all of it, but it is something that all dogs need done. Some I think do it on their own, and some need help? Most of the time the groomer will do this for you. It doesn't hurt them, I think its just a matter of squeezing them in the right place. You can search for it on here and I'm sure you'll get some better answers! |
I think I'll leave well enough alone. If it ever appears that he's dragging his bum, then, I'll bring him up to the vet. Seems to me that it makes sense that it's something they normally do on their own. And if it's a matter that having it done can lead to them not doing it on their own, I certainly wouldn't want to encourage that. Thanks for the comments!! There is just so much I don't know. I'm learning new things every day. And I just want (like everyone here) the very best for my little sweetie. |
Here is a good thread about diet and anal glands: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ands-food.html |
