How big will she get? Maggie is about 6 and half months old, a little over 3 pounds. She was 3.8 at her first vet visit, and we went back to pick up our dead dog, and i weighed her and I believe she gained like 8 OZ. She I belive shes about 3.18 ish 4.0 ? How big will she get? When will she stop growing. |

She could be 6 lbs or she could be 15 lbs or she could stay 3 1/2 lbs. No one can really tell you, the best way to know is to look at her lineage, grandparents and sire/dam lines. |
I know this thread is old but can I just ask how your dog died? |
We're getting our six month old puppy on Monday. We're paying extra because the breeder told us that she will most likely be under three pounds as an adult. She is now almost two pounds. Are we paying extra for a dog that may end up being the average size when she's an adult? We saw the mother and pictures of the father - they are all around 5 to 6 pounds. The breeder told us that every so often she gets a small puppy from average size parents. How can one know if the puppy will stay small? I have read that you double the weight at 12 weeks and that give you the adult size. I wish we knew if we were paying too much for a dog that will NOT be small. And, this puppy has the soft/cotton coat - not silky! Any thoughts on this? Thanks! Roxie |
I think you should start looking for another breeder. |

So basically, you are paying extra for a pet quality dog. She's not showable nor breedable because she's underweight and has a coat that doesn't meet standard. If I remember right, you said she was coming from the breeder already spayed, right? At least that is good. But a breeder that is asking more for a dog because it's smaller than standard is not exactly the most reputable. Is she telling you it's a teacup? Remember the links we gave you in your first posting? Oh, the weight thing- general rule of thumb is (depending on which source you cite) is either double the weight at 12 weeks or double the 12 week weight plus 1 pound. But every dog is different, and many people here have pups that didn't fall in to that neat little calculation. |
Maybe I'm naive but I've never heard of a breeder charging more because the dog is smaller than standard. If she's charging more because she went ahead and had her spayed for you ~ then that might be different. Just be aware that a 2-3 lb dog is going to require more care than a standard size dog. |
The dog's parents are actually the standard yorkie size. She was just born smaller. Also the breeder does not call her a teacup. |
