Benadryl---how much??? Hi all, Zhoie is after eveything in the yard, if it crawls or flies she wants to eat it. I'm afraid when she gets a bee or something she may have a reaction to it. Should I keep children's benadryl liquid on hand? If so, what dosage, she's 4.3 lbs? Also, what would the allergic reation symptoms be? Thank you! |
we just had a scare ourselves and the vet told me this very morning--1/3 teaspoon 2-3 times a day. Our thing was a reaction to meds. Maggie got pink/red all over and was sort of smacking her lips as to start salavating. It was a very long night. The er vet said to watch her for any symptoms such as irritabilities, racing heartbeat, trouble breathing, vomiting--things along those lines. Of course Maggie had a couple of those going on. Fortunately she is fine this morning and I do not think that I will need the benedryl. Thank goodness! Maggie is about 4.5 - just under 5 lbs. |
Oh my, I'm so glad she is ok today. I know you were just scared to death. What do you think caused her reaction? I will write 1/2 on my box, so I'm sure to get it right. These little stinkers. Opps, I saw it was a reaction to meds. I overlooked it the first time. So, glad she is fine now. |

yeah, Maggie is usually such a good girl and goes with the flow, she just couldn't get comfortable and was definitely irritated. She was warmish to the touch and just didn't look well. Her eyes are still glassy this morning. I woke hubby up last night and he even got up with us and just kept watch over her. :) She's been sleeping pretty much all day. She was all excited and acting normal this morning but when we went out for our walk she just stood there not doing anything or moving. She's asleep on my desk right now. lol |
Oh, the little sweetheart. She is such a pretty little thing. I meant to say 1/3. I had called vet this morning and the vet tech said 1/2, but I wasn't comfortable with that. So, I knew to come to YT friends for good advice. You have a super husband to get up and watch over you both! Hats off to him! |
12.5 mg of Benadryl is what I give for all of mine. We use it before I give boosters too. You can either give the child version or the adult which you cut into 1/2 a tablet. What I do is put the pill into a little cream cheese. The children version also has melt in the mouth which is also a good choice. Here is a sticky will all kinds of great information and Benadryl dosage is on there too. Take a look: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...g-dosages.html |
I use the pills bc my boys hate the liquid. A lot of us keep an "emergency kit" at home...and I think there is a sticky in ER/Sick about this :). Also, just check your liquid Benadryls to be sure the added sweetener is a safe one for dogs...I think there is a generic one out there that has a questionable sweetener...but it may no longer be on market....? |
Thanks so much...you all are just great! |
check with vet but the doseage is usually 1mg per pound we use the pill form it is 25mg i believe and i used a 1/4 as it was too hard to split down more than that just remember some dogs it will amp up like humans as it amped my dd so she cannot take benedryl because of that and some dogs it will sedate so depends on the dog if they can take or not. I think the sweetner ann is talking about is xylitol |

I do think it is a very good idea to be prepared for things like bee stings. If it were my pup and they were stung I would immediately give Benadyral, not panic and watch him. Benadryl is just a good staple to have on hand in any first aid kit for humans and pets. Gave some to my daughter just yesterday for hive~out of nowhere and sudden  |

On a first bee sting I would make sure my dog was not allergic to a bee sting as in a tiny dog if you do not react quickly and just give benedryl the dog could die so once you know your dog does not have an allergic reaction to bees then yes benedryl is safe if your dog does not get amped up on it that is I have dealt with hives twice with dd as she has horrible allergies and she got hives from simplicef an antibiotic and once from we think she licked dh neck and we think his cologne caused her to break out in hives within an hour. They are hard to get rid of too and took 5 days each time Allergic reactions are nothing to mess with and can be deadly in some dogs as we saw with Brandi. It can happen very fast There are 250lb humans that die of bee stings dh friend did not have his epi pen on golf course and was stung by a bee and died as he was allergic to bees so imagine what would happen in a 5lb dog if you do not react quick |

Or in the case of accumulated it is from antibiotics where someone takes an antibiotic for say 15 days then breaks out as dd was on antibiotic for 17 days when she broke out in hives so that might help in trying to figure out what she came in contact with within an hour of breaking out and MSG in food is known for causing hives as well in people as that happened to me when i ate chinese food once so i always make sure to check for msg in food now. |
