Cosequin? Hey, that's not a treat!!!! I have spent well over $100 on two different types of cosequin for my Maddie. She has only had her left rear leg bother her one time, but I wanted to start her on a joint supplement to hopefully not let anything get worse that what it is. The vet said he can manipulate the knee out of place, but it is only at 1 at the most. Anyway, first I ordered the "bonelets" They are bone shaped and hard. Maddie picked it up and spit it out without even chewing it. I then cut it up into 4 pieces and mixed it in with her kibble and she takes it out of the bowl and leaves it on her mat next to her bowl. Ok, then I ordered another that was pill form from Dr. Smith & Foster. When I got them, I was shocked. They are the size of horse pills!!! I swear as big around as a quarter. I cut those up in pieces too, but Maddie just refuses them. Is there any product out there that your babies don't refuse? I thought about just grinding up the tables and sprinkling it on her kibble... what are your thoughts? |
Cosequin capsules broke open and sprinked on soft food. |

Thanks! I had seen the capsules but didn't know if it was safe to break them open and use them like that. I was thinking if we are prescribed something in capsule form it should be swallowed whole and absorbed slowly...??? Was wondering who in the world could get their baby to swallow a capsule without breaking it up!!! |
Out of curiosity, does anyone's Yorkie eat the bonelets without trouble? We were planning on going to pick some of these up on Monday for Chloe. We're in the exact same boat as you are, Maddie! Chloe has one leg that is showing very minor early signs and I thought it might help to prevent or slow it if we started giving her the Cosequin stuff. -C |

I have give Widget Dasuquin since he had his surgery at 6 months of age. I give him a half a tablet everyday (the vet gave them to me) and he runs to get it every morning. He thinks it is a treat and has always love it. |
I usually bribe mine with putting the dasuquin in some cheese, potato, hot dog or something. They have also spit out the pill but once I do it again, they eat it. The key, for me at least, is to wrap it up where they cannot see it. They just think the treat is crunchy, lol |

Sorry,no advice to give. Your story just reminded me of my old girl, though. No matter how hard we tried, we could never sneak a pill in to any of her foods or treats. She would always "cheek" them and then spit them out when she thought we weren't looking. |
I also used to sprinkle the Cosequin on her food. The vet said that was ok. For pills, and my Jessie used to have to take several, I used to smash up, mix with a little honey and place the mixture in her mouth on her tongue. |

I give Libby Flexicose which is a liquid glucosamine complex. I just put 14 drops on her food each morn and she doesn't mind it at all. I go with the liquid because it absorbs better into the body. A bottle costs around 25...cheaper on Ebay...and lasts a very long time because of the small amount given each day. |
