Rabies shot making Asher "crazy?" I just took Asher in for his first Rabies shot on Friday. He was very sleepy for the first few days afterward, but yesterday evening and today, he's just been really wild! He's been biting me like crazy, I have a few cuts on my feet to prove it. And he's just been barking at nothing, he's chewed the cord off my hairdryer, my phone charger, and has recently taken to destroying clothes hangers. I know he's still teething at almost 18 wks old, but he wasn't this bad before. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it even the rabies shot doing it? |

I'm not certain about this, but is it possible that he just feels so good after being so sleepy for a few days that he's just got a lot of pent up energy? It could be that, or just the fact that he's a mischievious puppy at the age where they learn destruction :) I hope it's nothing to do with the vaccine - good luck! |

Wow, I've never had this reaction with any of my babies. I'd ask the vet about it. Poor little sweetie. |

Yes, this is a side effect from a rabies vaccine, not every pet will be effected like this but unfortunately some will.... Dr. Dee Blanco, D.V.M - "You take healthy animals and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you can see simple things like itching of the skin or excessive licking of the paws, sometimes even with no eruptions and licking of the air. We see a lot of epilepsy/seizure, often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive for several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary tract infections in cats, often within three months after their [annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you'll start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination." As rabies vaccines are known to elicit severe and even fatal adverse reactions, and are among the strongest vaccines antigenically and contain potent adjuvants to bolster their immunologic effect, giving them more often than truly needed is unwise, unnecessary, and can be unsafe,“ -Dr. Dodds. For rabies we often see: 1) Restless nature, suspicion of others, aggression to animals and people 2) Changes in behaviour: aloofness, unaffectionate, desire to roam, 3) OR clingy, separation anxiety, 'velcro dog' 4) Restraining can lead to violent behaviour and self-injury 5) Self-mutilation, tail chewing 6) Voice changes, hoarseness, excessive barking 7) Chronic poor appetite, very finicky I hope he's feeling better soon..... |

I think he's okay now. Maybe it was just the fact that he'd had a lot of sleep for those few days. It's been about a week, so he's calmed down some. It was just a little strange. Although, he does sleep a lot more now. Maybe the shot wound him up just so he'd be a sleepy baby all the time. :) |

The adverse effects of any inoculation is very, very scary. Our county requires the rabies vaccine but if they didn't I would be very hesitant to give it. Our babies do not go out of the fenced-in yard and they don't go to a groomer or a dog park so I wonder if they need all the vaccines that the vet says they do. This last time the only inoculation I allowed Scooter to have was the rabies which as I said is required by law. |
