Blood in urine
 
Charlie is almost 3 years old and he has periodically had blood in his urine since I got him at 3 mos of age. He's been treated periodically with antibiotics. Most recently he was treated with Clavamox. He mostly urinates out of doors - I walk him 4 - 5 times a day. But, he still uses puppy pads and that's where I see the blood. He is not neutered. He doesn't appear to be in pain and he's very playful. I don't have a lot of resources for tests, etc. Any ideas?

Blood in the urine is NOT good, you really really need to get him to a Vet :(

Has his urine every been cultured?
Xray? Ultrasound?

Dogs are so expensive...unfortunately. :(

:thumbup: Agreed.

He needs to have tests done to determine what the cause of the blood in his urine is... if your current vet has let this go on for such a long time, maybe it is time for a second opinion.

Dogs hide pain very well... he could very well be in pain from this and not be showing it.

Agree! Anytime there is blood in urine, they ARE in pain! My foster Katie was neglected by her previous owner when she had blood in her pee and it developed into four HUGE bladderstones! This was in the span of over a year, and your pup has had it since he was 3 months and is now 3 years? You need to find another vet!

This is a pic of her stones. See how huge they were? NOT good.

I'm glad you posted, I think people need to be aware that blood is a serious sign, and just because your dog isn't screaming in agony, it doesn't mean that they are not in serious pain. Dogs hide their pain because an animal in the wilderness, who displays any vulnerability, is attacked by predators. You really need to insist this vet do more tests, or find a new vet who will listen to you. You are Charlie's main advocate, and the vet probably thought this was a simple infection, but it's clear that it's not a "simple" infection, and it could be stones.

It can be very serious. when my sheltie had blood in her urine I took her in for a culture and she did have an infection but the fact that it returned again made them look herder and they found out she had bladder cancer. She was much older so I did some research and changed her diet and she no longer had any blood that I could see. The vet kept an eye on her to be sure she was ok and she did survive another 2 1/2 yrs to the surprise of my vet. so please have him looked at by a different vet.

Katie was not constantly whimpering, didn't really make a peep, even though her pee was BRIGHT BLOOD RED. Not pink, but RED. the only time she showed she was hurting was if you picked her up the wrong way and she would try to snap at you. It just seemed as if she was not a playful dog, bc she was in such pain, when in fact she plays constantly now that she's healthy (and she's lost over 1 lb!).

That's so sad, but I'm so glad her mama turned her over to a rescue so that she could get the help she needed.

I agree. He needs a sterile culture. He very likely has had a chronic UTI that hasn't cleared up because he needs a different antibiotic. Only a culture will tell your vet which antibiotic it will respond to.
