Another bout with Giardia? Sasha had giardia a couple months ago, it began slowly with mucus covered stools (no blood), then progressed on to frequent runny bowel movements and finally to vomiting and explosive diarrhea. I took her to the vet as soon as the vomiting began and Sasha was good as new just like that. Now here is what I don't understand. From what I can gather, every other dog has gotten orally administered antiprotozoal agents but Sasha was given two shots. The vet then sent us home, told me that Sasha should be better within 12 hours and lo and behold, she slept off the shots for a couple hours, and woke up bouncing. I can't remember what those two shots were anymore, just that one of them were an antibiotic, but has anyone ever heard of treating giardia with hypodermics antibiotics? And now to the main question. Sasha's had runny stools today, and woke up twice now to go out to pass more watery poop. Again, there is mucus in the stool and I did notice that a couple days ago she had a bit of mucus in her solid stool. From what I've experienced, this is the exact same precursor as the last time she was diagnosed with giardia. Is it normal for giardia to return in such short intervals? Do you think she had giardia to begin with? PS. Maybe I should try a new vet haha.. |
My 4 month old yorkie has gardia recently and she was treated with Panacur Granules and Metronidazole (benzoate). The Panacur is a white powder that was given for 4 days and after those 4 days, she took 1/2 tablets twice a day for 8 days. The powder and pills were measured and cut bythe vet staff. She recently finished her pills and another stool sample test was done. The results were good - no more giardia and none of the diarrhea and/ or explosive diarrhea anymore, thank goodness! My pup was never given any shots for her giardia. Since she just recently finished her pills, I don't know anything about giardia returning after such short intervals. I hope that won't happen! Good luck and I'd recommend you find another vet or ask your vet for medication instead??? |

the shot was probably convenia Convenia If they have had giardia before i think it is easier to get again and it is highly contagious so did you treat your yard or area she goes to the bathroom if not they can get it again so take a stool sample in asap http://www.petplace.com/dogs/giardia-in-dogs/page1.aspx |
there is a giardia vaccine now but i would not get that :( so that may be what he gave her Giardia - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! |
I swear by Panacur (albon) I use it for wormer on my puppies and adults. It can also be used to treat giardia and coccidiosis and its inexpensive. Its broad spectrum. Its a liquid, its good stuff and it is given when used for treatment over Im not sure maybe 10 days? THats a guess. Its actually for cattle, but it is used also to treat dogs and cats.
