Thwarted again I have Thor on a dry kibble for various reasons. He's a typical yorkie - he loves any type of forbidden food, but turns his little black nose up at actual dog food. I've tried a ton of kibbles, and he seems to hate Halo the least. When I first got him, I tried mixing in wet food with the dry, but he would just suck the wet food off and spit the kibble out. I resorted to free feeding because I know at some point he gets desperate enough to eat about 1/4 cup per day. Anyway, last week I had a brilliant idea. I had purchased dehydrated beef liver treats a long time ago, but didn't use them, mainly because they were too big to use for training. Anyway, I decided to grind the treats up and then sprinkle that on his dry food to season it. I made sure not to leave any chunks in because I knew Thor would just focus on those. Just now I realized Thor was not in the same room with me, which can only mean one thing: he is eating. But there are no crunching noises. How could this be? I check up on him in the kitchen, and yep, he's at his bowl, hard at work. But he's not chewing his food. Nope, he is LICKING his kibble. LICKING IT. He'd rather take fifteen minutes to lick tiny specks of liver off his nice, healthy kibble than actually eat any. Thor, you will be the death of me. |
:D these yorkies sure are something huh? they make us go to great lengths to please them |
Thor you are one smart cookie... but if you keep doing this, you're going to drive your mommy nuts! |

Have you tried blending the kibble a bit to alter the shape? Or moistening it? After mine ate moisten kibble for a month, I started to gradually make it drier, now even the old man crunches away on it.:D |
Have you tried Merrick? You add warm water and instant gravy. I gradually starting outting less water in their kibbles. That's how I introduce my kids to dry food. They eat raw morning and night and if they get hungry I have Innova out for them. By the end of the day the kibbles are gone. I did stop giving them treats too, until there plate was clean. You are just gonna have to find a way to outsmart him, yes it will be a challenged. |
Lol, Thor sounds like Wrigley! We have always mixed in green beans & a little wet food with kibble. The other two just eat, not Wrigley! Wrigley does the same she eats the green beans, licks the kibble dry to get all the wet food off and then she eats the kibble! She also picks out pieces she doesn't like and sits them all over the floor She does end up eating the kibble, but only after she's convinced she has eaten all the good stuff first! |
Hehee it must be a yorkie thing. I've tried just about anything to entice Mimi to eat. She'll even throw up yellow bile bc she turned her nose up to the food I offered her & her stomach was empty. I've switched to Acana Grasslands & they all love it. I do have to cut it up w/scissors...I hope it lasts. |
From the looks of that tongue in his avatar, you can tell he has a very discerning pallette...Gotta love him lol!!! |
He's such a smart little booger!!! Thor....youre going to be the death of your mommy!! Eat some kibble :) |
LOL -- this whole post just made laugh. You described it so well. I can see Thor just sitting there, reallllyyy concentrating and making SURE he didn't eat *one* kibble. Funny little dude you are, Thor, but don't drive your mommy too nuts! |

You have a way with words, this was so hilarious to read. Thor is too smart. I have the same problem with Uni, she is so picky, she keeps changing her mind of what she likes, I can never get that one free bag from petco when you buy 10! Now she's hating the Wellness core and only wants Lotus. :( |

If he is eating the dehydrated liver treat dust off the top you really might want to try Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw dinners. They have a similar texture to the liver treats and are easy to break up and grind and they are really meaty and tasty. I have not met a dog in the 2 years I've worked at my pet boutique that wouldn't eat it and I've even heard stories of dogs (and cats) breaking into cabinets and bags to get to it. It can seem scary to feed raw but Stella and Chewy's screens every batch of food for pathogens and salmonella and I have never heard of a recall for any reason in over 2 years. I think they are a very safe company and I'd really recommend trying it for your poor pup since he seems to hate everything else. |

That's so funny, I happened to pick up a bag of that very food the other day. I wasn't sure how use it. Maybe I'll try switching him over today. I'm pretty certain he'll like it better, since I've given him raw samples before and he's sucked it down like a power vacuum. |

Because of the way my two go after the raw, it's hard for me to wrap my head around pups not liking it? But, I just recently had someone pm me, saying their pup didn't like raw? She was smushin' it...I told her to leave it in little bite size squares, and maybe her pup would like being able to pick up each piece and eat it...Maybe, after Milo starts eating dehydrated raw, it will be easier to switch him over to frozen raw...My dogs dance for raw! |
Thor...what a little booger he is! I love yorkies no 2 are the same and they have such wicked little personalities at times that I'm not sure who is really in control us or them! Thanks for always providing us with Thor stories...I'm thinking you should write a book of them! Not to mention you are a hilarious writer! :-) |

Thor loves Stella & Chewy's! I bought the dehydrated kind, but I'm thinking I should buy the uh, hydrated kind. Where do they sell it? |
Pretty much any high end feed store. I'm sure you can google them. You live in SF I'm sure you'll find somewhere that carries it. |
