Anal Glands???? :eek: Anal Glands? A litte worried about my furbaby and his anal glands. Im not sure if there is a "set" time or frequecny to have the anal glands expressed or not. I've read that you shouldn't have them expressed and then other resources said the opposite. I'm confused! My puppy has his glands expressed about every two months. I feel bad about it, am I doing something wrong that is making it necessary to have them expressed. He's eating a "high quality" food, Wellness. I don't know what to do or if there is need to be worried. I want whats best for my lil guy! Please advice! Thanks in advance for your input and opinion. |
They should be expressed if they need to be, some dogs need them done frequently, some never need them done... so there is no set schedule. Certain foods may just not work for certain dogs, even though they are high quality... I had my dogs on FROMM and they never had any issues, never had their glands expressed... I switched them to California Natural and they started having a major problem needing them expressed, so I switched again to Innova and now we dont appear to be having any more problems. You can try adding fiber to your dogs diet (like canned pumpkin), other suggest adding green beans to try and bulk up the stool. |

All three of ours have had them expressed at various times and let me tell you every time, they needed them! They would be scooting and spinning around like tops and when they were done, they were full and potent! :p |
we recently switched food to acana and primal raw. Madison was scooting last night. Hubby took her for a 20 minute walk, she 'pooed' and all seemed well. I think if I see her scooting again (which she's never done before) I may try adding a few green beans to her meals to see if that helps. |
As gross as it is I express the anal glands for my Chihuahua's after every bath but they only get a bath about once a month. With Bella I have not started this yet and will not do it each time she gets a bath since Yorkies get such frequent baths but once she is older I will probably express her glands about every 2 months unless she has an obvious problem. Usually the groomer always does this as part of a good grooming. Some dogs seldom if ever need this but it seems like smaller dogs actually need this more than larger dogs. I think it's because they don't weigh very much and so when they sit on the rear to try to express it and drag themselves around their weight doesn't provide enough pressure to cause the release. There are probably several reasons these glands get full but if they get full and impacted your dog is actually very uncomfortable .......and you don't want them to drag their butts around and release this stuff on your carpet or you!
