Advice needed on "thumbs"being removed? Im not sure what they are called but the fifth nail on each paw..the one lady I talked with said " why remove them! its like their thumbs!" I am just concerned because my groomer ALWAYS nagged about my last yorkies "thumbs" hanging .... Any advice suggestions etc? thanks a million!:aimeeyork |
They're called dewclaws, and they can catch or snag on things and cause lots of pain. Ask your vet to look at them the next time you're in and see if he/she thinks they need to be removed. Some dewclaws are small enough that they don't require removal. I had my little foster boy's removed a couple of months ago and it wasn't that expensive. His were huge, though. |
They are dewclaws. :) There is a certain window that they have to be removed in (about 3-5 days of age); otherwise, they have to be anesthetized. It's one of those things that some people agree with and some don't. My girl has them and if I had had the choice, I would have had them removed (in the 3-5 day period). Probably not worth it to get it done during spay/neuter because extra pain could go along with it, etc. It's really up to you. but I can tell you they are not thumbs, they do not use them to grasp with like we use our thumbs, and I'm pretty sure they never miss them. :) |
They are called dew claws and the reason to remove them is, they serve no purpose for the dog but can get caught on things and torn, which may then require surgical removal. Much better to have them removed as pups than to take the chance of having them injured. |
Thanks all ! My Lola has her's she is almost 7 mo's come may 3rd. Should I consider? Her's are smaller... |
No, not now - I agree with Crystal's post above about removing dew claws after the 3-5 day period. But, please do keep them trimmed to lessen the chances of getting one hung up. |
My girl has hers and my boy does not. If I had the choice I would have preferred the breeder to remove them when she was just a puppy but I didnt want to put her through the extra pain and recovery of having them removed during spay... my vet also did not think it was worth it, they are attached securely. My groomer trims them down and has never complained about them being there. My personal opinion on the issue is that if they are still there when you get the pup, leave them be unless they are hanging loose or are causing your dog any issues. |
thank you everyone...my past yorkie Nikki ( BOY) he had his since a pup my mother said she didnt even know they were to have them removed. I adopted him from her my mom , and I kept 'em clean and trimmed but the darn groomer complained every time. Groomers asst that is. I was telling her the vet said they are ok! |
my girl came with hers removed. they don't really need them and from the horror stories that i have read, it is better to have them removed than risk getting them caught on something and having it torn off. |
