Extreme pain after rabies vaccine Mya had her first rabies vaccine today, and so far it has not been a good day! When we got home she was sleepy, so I forced big brother Oliver (who was SO happy to see Mya came back, I think he thought she was leaving for good) to chill and not bother her. (He's now sulking in protest of that one, lol). I went to pick Mya up to take her outside at around 4 and she screamed out in pain - and I do mean screamed. Ever since then anytime I so much as touch her, she screams. Unfortunately, I do have to pick her up every now and again as she has only learned how to go up the stairs - not down. I'm assuming this is a normal reaction, much like how badly the H1N1 flu shot hurt when I got it... Anyone else deal with this? Does it happen every time? She has to get another in a year, and then goes to once every 3 years. Is there anything I can do for her to help speed up recovery, other than keep her calm and quiet? It is so hard to pick her up knowing the pain it will cause her.. it's breaking my heart! |
You can put a cold compress on the site of the injection to help relieve the pain. When my Doodlebug had pain after his rabies he was the same way and it lasted several days. The vet told me that he could have a baby aspirin BUT that was for my pup as directed by my vet. |
I had that problem too when my pup got her first vaccine, but if I just left her in her kennel most of the day to rest. She recovered pretty quickly. I would just let her be and as long as you don't see any serious symptoms arise she should be fine. |
Thanks, I will try the cold compress. She seems to be doing a bit better, I was able to get her outside just now with just a small whimper instead of a scream. Hopefully tomorrow is better after a nice sleep in the crate where her big brother can't get her, lol. |
ya one of our Bichon pups in our litter did that after her first vaccines, I just left her in the kennel, so the other pups couldn't bother her. and she was back to normal the next day, |
She seems 100% fine today, she doesn't cry at all when touched or picked up anymore.. thank goodness that didn't last long! Not sure who it was harder on, her, or me! lol |
Mickey was in pain like that for his first shot. Now the vet gives him a Benadryl shot before any shots. This has helped so much! Also, per my vets direction for my puppy (disclaimer) I was to give him 1/8 of a baby aspirin when we got home. If the area bothered him I was supposed to put a warm compress on the area. I used a small microwavable boo boo bag thing I picked up at a craft fair (made of corn inside). ***Ask you vet about the Benadryl shot before the next shot. Be sure to mention the pain this shot caused. |
Addie also had this problem after her first rabies vaccine. She was lethargic and yelped in pain when the injection site was touched. It was also the only time I've ever been able to shut her in her crate without her going nuts. Like Mickey, Addie got a shot of Benadryl before her rabies shot the second time. She had no problems the second time. Glad to here Mya's feeling better! |
rabies vaccine Last year my little guy had the same thing. He was like a stone statue, he wouldn't walk or lay down or anything. He just stood there like he was made of stone. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I had to pick him up & gently lay him on his back on my knees so he would sleep for a few hours. THIS YEAR HE IS NOT GETTING A RABIE SHOT! I cannot see why this is needed every year, he is never in a situation where he could be bitten by some other animal that has rabies. |
