Orijen Regional Red? Has anyone heard of this food? Good or Bad? I saw a small sample bag at the pet store and picked it up? Do you think the no grain thing would be bad for Roxie? Any ideas or suggestions? Or personal experiences, good or bad? Thanks. |
I love grain-free foods and it's all Jackson has been eating since 6 months old. He does really great w/o grains, and I like him eating more meat content, since dogs were designed to eat lots of meat. :) I think Orijen is a great food  and it actually won some awards last year and the year before. I feed Acana, which is made by the same place, but it's slightly lower in protein (around 33%). We rotate between the Grasslands and Prairie flavors. |
I am not familar with this flavor, but Orijen is an wonderful food. I don't feed it just b/c I would have to drive over an hour to get it.:( then, my picky girls don't always want what is "best". LOL:rolleyes: |
Ok, good. I cannot wait to see how Roxie likes it, I had honestly never heard of it before. Is the high protein a bad thing? Thanks! |
Update* Roxie loves this food, she picks it out of the bowl over her current food Royal Canin. No mushy poops, gas, etc. So far so good, fingers crossed that it turns out to be a good food for her! |

High protein is good for dogs as long as they dont have any health issues that prevent it, like Britster said, dogs were designed to eat meat... I had mine on a grain free but had to change when they were diagnosed with liver issues (not caused by the food!) I got my parents to put their toy poodles on grain free and they are going great, there has been a huge improvement in energy level, coat, etc. |
I cannot wait to see a change in Roxie , to see what this food does for her. When I got her the lady had her eating Kibbles and Bits, and then I dont know alot about dog food, but decided to give Royal Canin a shot, but she seems really itchy since being on the Royal Canin, so I did some research and asked questions here, and decided to go with the Orijen, do you think the Regional Red is a good formula or should I try another one? Thanks for any input! |
I think you can't really go wrong w/ any formula of the Orijen. I'm glad she's liking it so much. :) I've heard lots of people say their dogs were very itchy on RC. |
It is amazing how itchy she has become on the Royal Canin, she is constantly rubbing along the couches and rolling around in the floor with the itchies. She goes to the vet this week, but still it seems crazy that a food can do so much harm to her skin. But I am looking forward to see what change is ahead for her with Orijen. Thanks for all your help! |
Well we mixed in a little of the Orijen red today and they seemed to really like it! I wasn't sure since the kibble is a little larger. So now we will see how their systems do with it. We have been testing the Orijen & Fromm. So far they have really liked both. The Fromm pork was not as big of a hit, but they still ate it! |
So far I am really happy with it, I dont want to make her eat something she hates, so to see her gobble this stuff up is great! |
we just switched to acana prairie ( which is made by orijen) and raw food and my dogs, poo isn't stinky, the eye goop is gone and Madison is losing weight. we are very optimistic. Good luck with your furbabies |
I slowly switched my dog from Life Abundance to Orijen, and a month later...she almost died. The food was apparently too rich for her. It has caused major HGE. She is still not completely well. The vet bills have been close to 1,000.00. She was so healthy before I switched....wish I never did. |
We switched to Orijen Regional Red last month and Armani loved it. She is less enthusiastic about it now but my little girl is an extremely picky eater. I am mixing green peas with the kibble and she enjoys it that way. I also have to cut the kibble for her because she does not enjoy kibbles that size, her preference is tiny bite size pieces. |
I think we have decided to go with Fromm instead of Orijen. I think I'm just concerned with the higher protein at this point. They seemed to like both and the kibble size is smaller on the Fromm anyway. If we had the Acana in this area, we would try that, but not one place carries it in town. |
