losing puppy teeth? so, today i went to feed my pup and saw something white in her bowl... i picked it up and freaked out when i saw it was a tooth! i didn't know about puppy teeth falling out until i read up on it some today after it happened. i showed it to my 3 year old who was amazed by it. he decided he wanted to "show it to the dog," so i let him hold it and he walked up to her and was trying to get her to look at it. well, being as though she licks his hand every time she gets near it and eats everything - she licked the tooth right up and ate it! i read also that it's common for puppies to swallow their teeth. this is all new to me. i'm just wondering - are there any risks involved or things to look out for when puppies are losing their teeth. i saw that it can be painful (i guess like a baby teething) so what can you do to help, if anything? |
Some have more trouble than others. Do pretty much the same thing you do for babies.:D Freeze a wet wash cloth and let her chew on it for a bit if you think she's miserable. Kacee was miserable when she was teething. She looked so pitiful sometimes. You can give them ice cubes to chew on. I played tug of war with Kacee and her rope toy a lot. I was trying to help them come out faster.:D Trying to get it over with as quickly and painlessly as possible. You will want to watch for retained baby teeth. Your vet will remove any retained baby teeth when they spay her. |
Oh yes, puppies lose teeth, and most of the ones my boys lost did get swallowed...both of them held onto their canine babies though, so you'll probably need to get those pulled eventually. For Joey, they were both pulled, and Tank had one pulled during his neuter, and one was pulled by me about a week previous. (they are both over a year old, we had them neutered after they were fully matured and such) Pretty much all you can do while they're teething is deal with their moodiness, and try to make them comfy. Joey gets very ornery when he's tired or in pain, so teething for him was not so much fun for us, either - he barked at pretty much everything (as he's doing now, when he's not feeling well because of his neuter stitches)... |
thanks for the advice. i'll try the frozen washcloth thing tmw. and see if she does it. she had been stealing socks and stuffed animals to knaw on, but it never occured to me she had teething needs instead of just puppy/chewing issues. it's hard for me to tell if she's miserable or not because i haven't had her too awfully long, and she's such a good/laid back puppy anyway. like i said, i'll just offer her the frozen cloth and if she likes it - i'll keep doing that. you learn something new every day! |
You can also give things like bully sticks, chews, kongs which will all help with loosening up those puppy teeth. I don't think that I ever found one baby tooth from any of mine so they must have eaten them. |
well, i tried the washcloth in the freezer, and she didn't seem to care for that at all. i did give her ice (the crushed ice from the ice maker) and she went to town on it! she seems to love socks and underwear the most - which my kids find hilarious. i have tried a kong with peanut butter in it (i tried that when first crate training) and she didn't care about it much. i guess it was too much work! |
