A question on poop color... sorry LOL... sorry but I need to ask. What effects the color of our yorkies bowel movements and is it an indication of food agreeing/not agreeing with them. I just found a food that I am happy with, good brand, lower end of the protein spectrum but still high quality protein sources since they are young, small kibbles, they are loving it, etc. Since the change their poops have been larger and firmer then the last food (this is good, they were having MAJOR anal gland issues on the last food). However, it is much much darker.. what does this mean if anything? And if you want to laugh at me thats fine too, we could all use a laugh today :D |
Every good doggy parent analyzes poop. :D If you go to other dog websites, poop is an obsession with all breed owners. I had the opposite experience with poop color: higher protein made my boys' poop darker and firmer. Glad to hear that your new food is a hit with your little ones. |
I just re-read your post...maybe it isn't the protein %, but the quality of protein (as you mentioned) that makes the poops darker and firmer. |

Darker is better. What food where you on and what did you switch to if you don't mind me asking? |

They were on California Natural Chicken and Rice and they are now on Innova Adult Small Bites... its not that California Natural is a bad brand or anything but there was no small bites version and the kibbles were just way too big for them and I wasnt convinced that they need to be on such a low protein food right now. Innova adult is still only 24% so I am satisfied with that. |
I notice darker poop in the stool with higher protein content as well |
I'm not sure that it makes a bit of difference as long as it isn't black or red (and obv. neither is the case here). Consistency (yuuuucky) is important. |
