Recommended fat content in food? As noted in another post, I have recently adopted my first Yorkie, and am now trying to find out all I can about what's best for her. I am currently feeding a commercial raw diet which I have my Minature Schnauzer on for health reasons (allergies, pancreatitis) She seems to be doing well on this diet, but I was wondering if there was any conventional wisdom about the best fat content for Yorkies? I know for a schnauzer it should be around 12% (and in my case lower), but I was wondering about the Yorkie...my girl is a little heavy at 4.4lbs...probably should be closer to 3.5...but otherwise very healthy and active. |
Which brand is it? |
Fat content, depending on what clinical research you read, suggests a 15%-19% ratio. Lowering the fat content for animals who are without chronic issues, may induce other issues with their health, such as skin and allergy disorders. Imbalances within the protein to fat content, cause nutritional imbalances within the dog. As you have specified that your Schnauzer has pancreatitis and is on a special diet, I would not include your new yorkie on it as well. If she is not receiving the "nutritional fat and protein requirements" for her body, then she will continue eating more until she does. This continuous eating will lead to serious weight and health issues. This is one of the main causes of Pica in animals. This "nutritional-starvation" is represented by a continuous hunger, which directs them to eat everything . Also, on a low protein, low fat diet, most of the Kcal and the nutrients are coming from carbohydrates, which is not really a good thing. While carbohydrates are great for feeding all the muscles of the body, they are not great at building and maintaining them as they are not as "nutritional dense" as proteins and fats. Hope this helps. |
Thanks for the advice. My schnauzer and her are both on a commercial raw, based on Venison (for the lower fat), but grain free. It is from Tollden Farms (The Next Generation Raw). I am trying to make sure that the Yorkie is getting higher fat/protein treats, while my schnauzer is getting dehydrated sweet potato and plantain...I know these littler dogs need the extra calories sometimes because of their energy needs...Does anyone have a favorite protein when feeding raw? |
