Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies I know all puppies chew, but my 7 month old eats everything she chews. She started off being a poop eater and I know there are several different opinions on why they do that, but now that the weather is nice I can't keep her from chewing and eating the sticks and mulch in our yard. I know she is literally chewing it up and eating it because I am seeing the results. She would prefer to chew and eat much or a stick, leaves, branches, or anything dry and dead, over a bully stick. She recently got a clean bill of health, teeth examined, and she is on Wellness puppy. Can she be deficient in something in her diet that is making her crave raw wood? If I were to try a vitamin/mineral supplement, which one would I give? |
Bump... I just give mine Pet Tabs but some other members might have better suggestions... |
Pica in humans and dogs is usually do to a dietary deficiency. However you are feeding Wellness so that point should be moot. Eating abnormal amounts of grass, sticks, or coprophagia may be symptoms of an underlying chronic disease; or it may just be a 7 month old with teething issues. I would try to correct the behavior now. Make sure that while out in the yard you are replacing the sticks with other chewies like bully's, flossies, tendons; something that he should be eating, and that he also likes to eat. So you may have to experiment with several new treats. You may also want to stuff a Kong with a little peanut butter and freeze it for about 10-15 minutes, just enough to cool it down, that might help if it is teething. Give yourself, and him, time for you to get the behavior changed, as it probably is just that; behavior. However, if you cannot, say within several weeks, I would definitely then consider a CBC or urinalysis for any type of organ dysfunction. Hope this helps..... |
I don't have any advice on getting your pup to stop eating those things, other than supervision and distraction. But, you should be sure you don't have that type of mulch that is made with cocoa. Dogs love to eat it, and we all know that dogs shouldn't be eating chocolate. |
