A lot of times, the feeding guidelines listed on food bags say to feed a lot more than you really need to. The more you feed, the quicker you'll have to buy a bag a food again if that makes sense. You may have to do some experimenting to see how much your baby really needs. It sounds like you put down what the bag recommends, but she doesn't eat it all. You could try cutting back little by little until you get to an amount where it seems like she's eating it all or most of it at least. Blue Buffalo would be an excellent food to chose. There are better foods, but Blue isn't as expensive as them and is affordable. Plus, since you'd be feeding a better food, you actually end up having to feed less of it since the quality is so much better. If you do switch foods, make sure to do it gradually as you don't want to upset your baby's tummy. Usually over a period of 2-3 weeks works, some can do shorter, some need longer. Start with 75% old food, 25% new for a few days, then 50/50, then 25/75...etc. You get the idea! :) |
Hi, I feed my too fat guy Blue Buffalo weight control. He also loves green beans, frozen, right out of the freezer. He's on a diet because I got lazy - not walking him in the morning before work - and then not being able to walk him in the winter. Too much ice. He was fine but i was afraid I was going to fall and break my neck. I feed him a little less than recomended but also add a little wet food in. No more treats except the green beans. Now that the weather has warmed we are walking every night. He's so much happier. I'm hoping to get him back to the weight he was when I got him 2 years ago. |

when you touch her between her thighs, is there flabby mushy meat? |
Keep in mind that some dogs don't have a fully defined waist - they can have a "cobby" build. I'm thinking that if your vet didn't mention it, it's probably okay... most vets are very alert to overweight pets. You could also post some pictures here to get our opinions if you like. FYI, the correct term is "porky yorkie". :) I walk Thor or take him to the park for at least 30 minutes every day, and I try for 60. I guess I'm lucky in that he gets antsy and barky after even a day or two of insufficient exercise... he keeps me on my toes. On the weekends, I try to get one long afternoon activity with him, be it a hike, or a yorkie social. |

I was looking at charts online and saw that if they have excessive skin they that means they are chunky. OR Porky yorkie ;) I like that hehehhe I'm def going to take away the soft food. Go to petsmart and see if I can return or exchange for credit or something :( |

Thor is one lucky doggy! Jackson gets the same way... just earlier actually... he found a piece of trash on the floor and started chewing it and he was rolling all over it, with his back legs straight in the air, flinging the piece of trash in the air (it was a big piece of styrofoam cup) so of course I go over to get it from him and he starts his "chase-me-if-you-can" game that he does when he's bored... even though he KNOWS drop it! haha! That's when I know he needs a walk. So now we just took a good 45 minute walk, I got back on my computer, and Jackson is plopped down on his dog bed by my feet. |
