Need Feeding Advice! We have recently adopted a one year old spayed yorkie female. Everything is great, however, we cannot seem to get her to eat dry food. She gets a little pckg. of Little Ceasars once at night, has very few treats during the day, but will not eat her dry Iams in the a.m-or ever. I've tried a tiny bit of bacon grease, milk, chicken or beef broth, nothing works. Her previous owner just said leave it out and she'll eat it, but it's been a month and nothing. I've even tried to mix it in a little bit with her soft food, but she manages to eat around it! I prefer not to leave her food all day as we do not have a doggie door, and need to monitor her bowel times as she is in sych w/our other dog. She is very happy, healthy, well mannered, perfect for out lifestyle, but am concerned that she either isn't getting enough food or just hoping that maybe she was too spoiled and got too many treats previously. She weighs about 4-5 pounds. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! |
Have you tried just putting it down twice a day and not giving any treats or canned? I don't usually recommend this, but she is likely holding out for canned.... If you want to switch entirely to canned, that is fine too. Whatever you feed, her teeth should be brushed often. Or maybe switch the dry food to something else? If a dog is really picky, continually doing this isn't a good idea, but maybe once to see if maybe she really doesn't like the Iams? By the way, a lot of dogs are lactose intolerant, so milk could be a problem. Also, bacon grease can trigger pancreatitis. It is very dangerous to give even a very small amount to Yorkies. |
You may want to try mixing the wet up with the dry. This can entice dogs into eating more dry kibble. Also you may want to try a food with more real meat ingredients because that may entice her more too. Iams is mostly made with corn and so it does not smell or taste very good to little meat eaters. Try california natural for a cheaper but more meaty natural food or Innova if you want to spend a little more. So to a local natural pet food store and ask for samples or contact the companies yourself because many will send samples. |
Lots of good food advice here. :) I choose to feed a homemade raw diet with lean hamburger, sardines, rice, cottage cheese, eggs and vegetables along with vitamins and supplements. All human grade ingredients so that I am certain of the quality of the food. pm me if you're interested in the recipe. Good luck! |
