Yorkies under 4 lbs.

Are Yorkies healthy if they are under 4lbs full grown? I have read that if they fall under that weight that they will be sickly.

I have chosen a yorkie that is 1.2 lbs at 8 weeks and the breeder said she might not get over 3 lbs full grown. Should I be concerned?

Just because they're small doesn't necessarily mean they're not healthy. Granted, a lot of little ones seem to get sick more, and there's a whole lot more precautions to worry about... getting stepped on, jumping off furniture, REALLY fragile, but I know there's a few on YT with little ones smaller than 4lbs so hopefully they see this thread :) I would be a wreck. I am very content with my 12lb boy and wouldn't want it any other way! He seems so small to me so a 4lber... I just couldn't do it.

I can't speak for all really small yorkies but my Fiona is under 3lbs and is healthy. She is very fragile though. She did break her foot when she was younger. I think if you find a good breeder and not one that is breeding unhealthy pups, your main concern is safety. We have to be extra extra careful with our baby.

I would ask the breeder if they test for Liver shunts. My Teddi is 3 lbs and she had a liver shunt because I'm sure the breeer didn't test for it. Although I see that you happen to live in Tennessee so that's the best place to live. We went from California to Tennessee to have surgery at UT!! I know plenty of people who have dogs under 4 lbs and most are completely healthy!! Is the breeder someone who is on YT? I would trust the breeders that are on here because they are very knowledgeable!

Bellasmygirl 04-06-2010 05:14 PM

I'm not sure if she is on YT or not. But she has six yorkies of her own and has been breeding for 6 years. Not all her yorkies that she has breeds. She only has two that she will breed. I have been to see the puppy twice now. She is very fiesty and loves to play. She hangs with the bigger ones like she is just as big or bigger. I pray she will be okay.

I have 3 yorkies smallest 2.8 lbs. largest 9.2 lbs. Daisy the small one is healthy. Any size yorkie can have health problems, but I have to be more careful around Daisy because of her size. I had no idea Daisy would be that small, but I wouldn't take a million dollars for her. She is a sweetheart:)

Sofia is 2.5lbs at 10 months old. She has had no health problems, but you need to have a vet who knows how to care for the small ones. They must understand anesthesia for the little ones and medications sometimes need modifications due to their size. You will have to have a safe place, ie playpen or x-pen to confine your baby when there are a lot of people around or if you need to leave them alone. I thought Sofia was going to be a little bigger, And she may gain a little more, but it wont be much. I love the fact that she is not problem to carry around everywhere I go. She doesn't know that she is small, she thinks she's in charge and she is my protector. No matter what size the puppy is it could have health problems, all you can do is check out the breeder and take a leap of faith.

Bellasmygirl 04-06-2010 06:22 PM

I have interviewed a couple vets to see if and who knew the most about yorkies. I have narrowed it down to one that is close by. There is also animal hospital within 20 mins of my house if they are not open.

I think we will be fine. Just wanted to hear from some YT owners that have small ones too.

Thanks everyone.

yes, i worry about them all the time. milu's never been stepped on and she is well behaved, she doesn't jump on and off the furniture, but my new puppy is always jumping on and off the furniture. i try to stop him... he's also been stepped on twice...:(

if you have a small baby, you are going to have to learn the yorkie shuffle! :D

it really helps to put a bell on the dog so you can hear them all the time and know where they are, so you don't accidentally step on them.

Thats so funny. I have already bought little bells to go on a collar for her. I was scared I would step on her. Someone told me they were for cats! (they do not have a yorkie)

What do they know!!!

I'm sure I will learn the yorkie suffle very quickly.:D

Thanks

Sugar is roughly 2.3lbs, 14 months old. She's healthy, but I still have to take extra care of her, like, I couldn't walk too fast in the house, just in case she suddenly runs to me (I wouldn't want to step on her). She's too short, couldn't jump on furniture on her own, so I don't have to worry too much. Congratulations on your new furkid :)

My little girl is 3 pounds. She was 1 pound when I brought her home at 12 weeks. We thought she would be about 5-6 pounds full grown. Oh well... I’m not sure if I could handle 2-3 pounds of extra cute! :P
There are times where I wish she was a little bigger but its mostly when we are walking and i have to pick her up because she WILL get stepped on. Ever walk into a pole? I must admit that I have... and that was in plain sight.

We don’t even think about it much anymore. She looks huge to us now. The only time I realize how small she really is, is when I see her around other dogs.

As far as her health, I have a great vet and she has told me that my little dog is one of the healthiest dogs she sees.

And be ready for vet bills! I put aside a puppy fund and boy did I use it. Anytime I thought something was wrong I brought my girl to the vet. Who knows if the little problem was a big one? this was my first dog, I was happy with the peace of mind being safe than sorry. With any dog things can go wrong so quickly. I never took a chance.
"You look sad today Lula? Something wrong? Lets go to the Vet!" ok, a bit exaggerated but you get the idea.

it's good you don't walk around fast in the house, the only time i stepped on my new puppy was when i was in a rush and walking fast in the house. (plus he wasn't wearing a bell, because it got taken off for his bath)

i think maybe sugar doesn't jump on furniture because she is a good doggie. :D milu doesn't jump on furniture either. but my new puppy that is smaller and with shorter legs (because he is a maltese) he is made of springs, and he can jump on furniture with no problems... i was surprised and i am trying to teach him not to do that!

Jack is 3.5 lbs and 3 years old. We don't have any problems with him. He is healthy and very active. He is also not afraid of anything. He makes me worry because he will attach any large dog he sees but is fine with small dogs. My girls are 5.5 lbs and 6.5 lbs and he rules them.
