the chlorhexedine can make them vomit if they drink it and this has xylitol in it so i would not use this :( it is ok to wipe the chlorhexedine on teeth as i have no issues with mine but I would not let them drink it and xyitol is not good for dogs :(

WOW...you guys are great. I am upset though that the vet would give us something that could make the dogs vomit. Debbie...are you saying though that you use it to wipe their teeth with rather than drink it. I wondering if I should return it to my vet or use it to wipe the teeth.

My veterinarian recommends Leba III, an herbal spray that prevents the build-up of plaque or tartar. One bottle lasts approximately 8 months.

i use petzlife gel, doggie toothpaste (can't remember the name of it), and CET chews.

i am gonna try other products people suggest in this thread too. :D

I brush their teeth nightly with enzyme toothpaste, and I use Petzlife gel 3X a week. Both my boys' teeth are clean and white, with minimal plaque. I have to say that the Petzlife has worked for us. :)

what's the difference between plaque and tartar?

Tartar is mineralized plaque.
Brush the plaque away to avoid tartar...

if they have tartar then only the vets can get rid of them or does petzlife gel work for tartar? i see something dark on milu's back teeth, i don't know if it's tartar or plaque. (she is 2 years old)

well i used it for a year and my demi lost 27 teeth so i would say petzlife is not the cure all but it can help soften the tartar some say - I should have taken her in a year earlier but i thought the petzlife could reverse the tartar but in demi's case it did not work sadly :( but for maintenance maybe so

if they will not return it then wipe the teeth with it - i would not let them ingest that :( jmho - yeah that has been a big issue as xylitol is in alot of dental products for dogs and then it is stated not safe for them - I think many times with food and products vets just trust the pharma and companies with things that they are doing the correct research and why i think it is important for us to educate ourselves. Our dentist said just brush the teeth twice a day like we do as he is not big on all the products :(

It may work depending on how bad the tartar is... if there are just few dark spots of tartar it may get them off, however, if the gums are already looking like they are affected and there is a lot of tartar it wont reverse that. I would use it every day for 30 days (thats the instructions on the bottle I believe) and if you still have not seen an improvement then consider a cleaning or at least have a vet examine the dogs teeth.

The petzlife really works amazing as a preventative measure... I have been using it since my kiddos got their big kid teeth.

It's tartar and staining (probably tartar).
It needs to be scraped off. There are claims of Petzlife taking care of that or softening it and those are peoples' personal experiences, so I won't say they are wrong. I will say I decided against the product and a very popular, board certified, small animal dentist does not like it at all. The alcohol content concers him and I don't think he's convinced that it works anyway. I have to go with his opinion because he has spent his life studying teeth and I can't say he doesn't recommend it because he wouldn't make money off of it because he could always sell it. So.... We use OraVet.
