my Yorkie has been vomitting for two months!
 
It started after the haircut in Petshop store. At first I didn't get alarmed, it happened before occasionally. A year ago we had similar problem, took the dog to the vet, he prescribed Sulcrate suspension and it helped after 3 days.
This time he(same vet!) gave us a different medicine - Famotidine. It didn't help. Next visit we did the full checkup- xray, blood test, urine test, cost me a fortune. And new medicine - Cisapride. This medicine didn't help either, and once my dog had a seizures.
I asked for the initial Sulcrate- hopefully it may help.
I have an impression that my vet is going after the money, now he suggested to do ultrasound and gastroscopy.
And I blame myself why I didn't ask for that first medicine at the beginning? Do you think we lost too much time? Can she develop some serious condition?
Please, let me know, what esle I can do to help my dog. All the tests didn't show any problems and she is normal, joyfull and has a pretty good appetite. She is only 3 y.o.
I feed her now with gastro formula (can food).

How many times a week does she throw up?
Is she vomiting or regurgitating?
Was any bloodwork done beyond a blood panel and CBC?
When was the seizure? After eating or before?

At first she vomited early in the morning, once, with white foam. Later she could do it any time, but not more then once a day. I tried not to give her any food for 24 hours, it works for couple days, then she vomit again. There is no food in her vomit, only the foam, now it can be yellow, sometimes white. Some days she doesn't vomit at all.
The siezures happened most likely after the overdose of the Cisapride medicine, I search the Internet and found possible side effects of this medicine. It happened only once immidiately after she took the medicine. The dose was microscopic and it was difficult to measure.

Trying to answer all your questions, Ellie.
I can't really tell the difference between vomiting and regurgitating. But it happenes not right away after she eats, but actually before she eats.
For the blood work there were two tests, one for pancreatite, negative and then some general test. They told me that her blood test was perfect.
Urine test was done to see if there is any infection, negative too.
I think that may be the food need to be changed, I used what vet has reccommended, it is called t/d (Canadian brand), but now she eats Gastro can food.

This is an important detail, I know that dogs with low blood sugar will do this, how long does she go between meals?

that is my guess as white foam means the stomach is empty, yellow means there is still bile in the vomit so not totally empty and then there is vomit with food in it.

Regurgitation vs vomitting is regurg is when they vomit with no effort meaning their stomach is not pumping to vomit so it is effortless and that is usually tied to the esophagus and does not sound like what is going on. I am thinking you need to feed 3-4 times a day smaller meals throughout the day.

Can you send a link to the diet?

if it is before eating then it is empty stomach or almost empty
famotidine is pepcid a/c
sulcrulfate is pepto bismal without the aspirin in it so best for dogs as i do not believe in using pepto bismal in dogs as the new formula has aspirin in it so not safe in my opinion

She doesn't eat a lot and we try to feed her small amounts 2-3 times a day. My mother (72 y.o.) stays with her during the day and I can't tell for sure how much she feeds her, but I keep telling her not to give her too much.
When this started she vomited with little efford, now it can be painful to look at her, because it might take some time before she managed to vomit.
May be I should start cooking for her? Any recommendations?

this is for dogs with periodontal disease not dogs with stomach issues :( I was afraid of that

yeah that diet is designed to wrap around the teeth and scrape teeth the way the kibble is designed - honestly not a good diet for what you are describing and she may not eat it due to shape of food :(

with stomach issues i would try hill's ultra z/d wet or w/d -- if she is making effort to vomit it is not esophagus related it is gastrointestinal -- I think it is related to diet.

Can you describe what happened 12-24 hrs prior to this vomitting occurred ? any change in diet, did you move, anything stressful, age when started, is there any diarrhea associated with it as well, any change in water? (use spring bottled water if not doing so already), etc?

Is this the food you are feeding now, or the food you use to feed? I thought you said that you were using canned food now?

Ok, I will explain again about our diet. Once we got Maggie we were giving her Wellness dry food for small dogs. For a year or more. Then our vet recommend us this t/d food for her teeth. I combined Wellness and t/d, but Maggie liked that t/d better. The only problem I had with t/d - even for small dogs the balls are quite big. She liked to play with the food and eat 3-4 balls at a time, but few times a day.
She started vomiting while she was on t/d food. Prior to that we took her to petshop for her regular haircut. I am afraid she might be stressed there.
We start giving her gastro can food only after vomiting took place.
Now she is taking Sulcrate suspension for 5-6 days and her vomiting has stopped for a while, but today it happened again along with diarrhea. I am not sure why - because of medicine or because of yogurt I gave her. I gave her yogurt before and she never had diarrhea.
I think that Sulcrate is working - but how long we can take it and what if vomiting starts again when we stop giving her medicine?

Some dogs have diarrhea and vomiting after every food change, but it only lasts about 4 days and they get use to the new food, if you keep changing the food, you can increase the length of time they have diarrhea and vomiting. I'm not saying that this is the problem, I just want you to be aware of the fact some dogs don't do well with lots of food changes. Give only a tiny bit of the food the first day, and if no diarrhea you can increase the food.

sulcrulfate is pepto bismal without the aspirin for dogs. Many dogs are lactose intolerant so i would not use yogurt as can make them worse. I use non-dairy probiotics - it is dds plus and you can get from vitamin shoppe - sounds like your dog first spun out of control from stress colitis then food changes have made it worse most likely. Colitis can be tough to treat if it spins out of control and vomitting is a sign it has as then the entire digestive tract is inflamed both small and large intestine. If just diarrhea then large intestine only is affected. Also t/d may have an ingredient in it for teeth like chlorhexedine like the cet chews which can cause some dogs to vomit and why i do not like it ingested. I use chlorhexedine to wipe the teeth though as it is the best to kill bacteria and why they use for non-anesthetic cleanings and regular cleanings in humans and dogs.

This is just my take - how is your baby doing now?
