Bloodwork results not good Joey had liver shunt surgery a year ago. His shunt was 90% closed and all of his post-surgery BAT results have been great. In October, his post-fast result was a 2, but this month it came back at 44 (I can't recall the pre-fast result at the moment). The vet wants him re-tested in 3 months, but didn't order him back on the enulose. He had been treated as a "normal" pup when his BAT was normal. Not sure what's going to happen, but worried. He couldn't tolerate the RX diet for liver since it caused him pancreatitis. He now eats Natural Balance chicken and sweet potato and loves it. The vet said to wait, but I feel like I should be doing something. |
Wasn't this the pup that had the cellophane band instead of the ameroid constrictor? On any supplements now? Is this his general vet or specialist? |
That is correct. He has not been on any supplements and has developed a bad habit of eating my other dogs' poops in the yard. We pick up but he always seems to find them. I wondered if this could affect his liver. He is seen for these tests only by the internist where his surgery was performed. |
Hoping our liver experts will see this. Do you do the Yahoo group thing? I'd wonder if he is developing another shunt, but that number would be too low for that. Is the same food always used to test? Was the pre# normal? I'm not sure you are going to be able to do much if internist doesn't want to, but all I can tell you is I don't think I'd want to wait 3 months to recheck. I also think since there are more bile acids problems, supplementation and/or diet change is probably not a bad thing. |
Thanks, unfortunately I did not write the results down and can't remember the pre-fast results. Vet didn't think he had acquired another shunt. She thought his liver might be leveling out at this, but 2 to 44 is a big jump. His diet has not changed. I hadn't been on the Yahoo group in awhile. I think I got so complacent that he would just live a normal life, and now I am thrown back into reality. I love him so much, he is the sweetest dog I know, loves everyone and every animal he meets. |
I'm sorry to hear his blood results weren't good. Is the food you are feeding him a high protein food? Or just regular . . say between 20-24? Hopefully, his next test will be better. I'm with you; I would want it re-done in a month as opposed to three months. |

I wouldn't have been feeding chicken food. Teddi had her surgery 2 1/2 years ago but I have still been feeding her the RC Hepatic food as suggested by UT. They said although she was "fixed" you should still continue to feed a low protein food. I hope the celo did not come off but I have heard of surgery not working at other places. I haven't heard any non-success stories from UT. You might want to switch to a lower protein food. Also do you give treats? You should give any high protein treats or rawhides or meat. I would test again and make sure but changing the diet will be helpful too. |
Joey did not tolerate the RC Hepatic food well. Those liver diet foods are low in protein but higher in fat and that gave Joey pancreatitis. The food he is eating now is a compromise between his liver and pancreas problems. I do not give him any meat treats at all; only grains and fruit based treats. I never heard of the cellophane coming off. |
It's not really high enough to be another shunt, but it's not low enough to ignore and not worry about either. It could have been the gallbladder, but I wouldn't want to assume that in a case like this, esp. after the band was used. B/c he was negative for MVD and b/c the number was down to 2, I don't think it's that... I would definitely be retesting shortly to make sure it isn't getting any higher. |
