Luxating Patella Questions On my last two vet visits, the vet mentioned Roxie having luxating patellas in her rear legs. :( I did a bit of research, and see that it's common in small breed dogs. If Roxie is showing no symptoms of a problem, how concerned should I be? She doesn't limp, and she loves to run around. She doesn't show any signs of discomfort or pain. She does do quite a lot of hopping around on her hind legs (we jokingly call her a circus dog when she does this). Should I be discouraging this action? Any info appreciated! :) |
:) hiya , poppy has luxating patella in both her back legs too , the vet has mentioned it to us a couple of times , it does not seem to stop her doing anything , she loves to walk and run , she is not in any pain , i think only time will tell if she needs a operation , if she does we will just have to deal with it , fingers crossed for roxie too :) love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
What Grade are they? I would get your pup on a joint supplement (cosequin or dasuquin)... you dont have to keep them still all the time but if you can limit high jumping that would be good. |
Here's some info on what the difference between the grades are : OFA: Patellar Luxation Grades and some other info: OFA: Patellar Luxation Information Uni has grade 3 but has only hiked up one leg once. She is on cosequin and is doing great. How old is your yorkie, bc most young pups will always have loose kneecaps. They should be evaluated again when they get older. |

I will get him cosequin too now...my puppy was 4 months when the vet told me he has looser kneecap than normal, now at 8 months the vet said he has LP. Can it still change? |
What grade? Callie has grade 2 in one and grade 3 in the other and they pop opposite of what most do and our vet gave us a vitamin for her. Callie loves to run and jump and everything and you can see them pop in and out but she never seems to act like it bothers her or hurts. |
Thanks for the link! I don't know what grade. I didn't know about the grades when the vet told me, so I didn't know to ask. I will have to make sure I ask next time. She is 3 years old. |

So, you think it is a good idea to give those supplements if there has been no diagnosis of LP? just as precaution? |

When I first got Jack, the first vet I saw said he was healthy. Then, I went to the same place but a different vet saw him for his last round of shots. She said he had grade 2 in one knee and grade 3 in the other. She said it was imperative that he has surgery to correct it right away and she has some vets she would recommend for me to contact. I didn't buy it at all. I took him to a different vet who corrected this misdiagnosis. The new vet said she couldn't even force his knee caps out so she couldn't even begin to tell me how this other vet could move them so easily. Moral of the story, get a second opinion from another vet even a third it you want. I had one vet check his knees during his first check up, another 3-4 weeks later and misdiagnosis him, and then had it corrected. Even now, I have having medical issues with Jack and getting him reevaluated. I understand that vets go to school for this but not all of them know everything. It's always better to be safe than be sorry. |
Thanks for the info on the supplements. I will look into it. Unfortunately, it was 2 different vets that told me about Roxie's knees :( |
That's a shame. Depending the grade, she may never need surgery. I think I would be more concerned if she was showing symptoms but since she isn't, I wouldn't rush into surgery. I'm not familiar with supplements... sorry But good luck! I hope she never has to have surgery. |
If she's not hiking her leg then I bet she's a grade 1 maybe a 2. A grade 1 simply means the patella can be manipulated out of place, but when let go, goes back into place. If a grade 1, you pup technically has LP, but why in the world would you want surgery for that? Remember Uni is diagnosed grade 3 and she has only hiked up her hind leg once. |
Sydney goes in tomorrow morning for surgery on both back knees (Grades 3 and 4). I had gotten a second and even third opinion. Both knees are bad. The third opinion said that I could wait until she was in pain, but the first two said since she's 9-months, it would be better to do them now. She has limped a few times. I have her on K-9 Glucosamine. Please pray for her. I am sorry for hijacking this thread. Didn't mean to, but I am very nervous. |
Oops...I posted under my mom's Log In. Sorry, Mom. Quote:

Let me tell you, she is almost 5 now and walks, runs and jumps perfectly and she healed up extremely quickly! The only advice I would give you is to get your pup on a joint supplement as soon as the surgery is over because they can still have an issue with arthritis in the "fixed" knee. Good Luck! I know how nerve- wracking it is  |
we had VPI pet insurance too and they dont cover any expenses relating to luxating patellas since it is very common...they would even cover the vet appointment that diagnosed it... we ended up cancelling our policies since we were paying more to the then they covered... i wish they had since our Piper had her surgey on both knees thrusday and it cost us just under $4000 |
Unfortunately, Roxie has been showing signs of a problem the past few days. She has missed the couch and the stairs a few times while trying to jump up. She doesn't greet us with her usual "dance" on her hind legs when we get up or come home. She has been laying on her side more than in the usual dog position of legs folded underneath her. She's not running after her toys, and going for walks has become difficult. This is all very sudden. Could it be the weather (high heat and humidity) is affecting her knees? I am getting very worried now. |
I would probably get her in to be seen. Lucy just got a diagnosis of LP too - from an ER vet so I am anxious to see what her regular vet has to say. Her back legs would actually give out and she would lay down and not be able to get up . . .so I'm worried too. |

Did you ever get her on a supplement? |
Took Roxie to the vet today. They did some blood work just to make sure it wasn't something like Lyme Disease causing her issues. Blood work came back clear, but the doctor did a double take when he weighed her. She has gone from 6.75 pounds in March, to 7.7 pounds! He said it is most likely a result of her spaying, but that it could certainly be wreaking havoc on her bad knees. He suggested she not overexert herself for the time being, and that we get Dasuquin supplements. If she doesn't show signs of improvement, he said we may be looking at surgery down the road, which of course has me freaking out. |

Hot Rod had lp surgery on one knee, he would skip and hop with his leg up and then he didn't want to walk. He would sit down and that was very unusal for him as he loves to go for walks. In our case, his ligament was off to the side and his leg was bowing out. Feel free to pm if you have any questions. Best of luck to you. |
LP here too... Off to the vet tonight for Schmoo...all of a sudden she was favoring one back leg...couldn't jump as high and hopping about on 3 legs...then she seems fine, then she is on 3 again. The vet did mention the loose knees when she was young but no mention of it since, she just turned 3! So we will see what the vet says, my breeder says do NOT do the surgery use the other things mentioned on here, supplements and glucousamine etc. Anyone had any luck with any of those supplements? Any recommendations here? thanks :( |
I HIGHLY recommend this...Flexicose. Liquid Glucosamine Arthritis, Liquid Glucosamine Arthritis Stiff Joints - Flexicose Liquid Glucosamine Safe Arthritis Pain Relief For People Pets Dogs Cats Its a glucosamine supplement and has worked wonders for Snickers. Snick has LP grade 3 surgery last Nov and is doing great. He still would hike his LP leg up every now and then but since he has been on Flexicose, he hops around like a puppy again, it's amazing!!! I wish I would have tried it before we decided surgery as the Dasuquin he was on didn't do much for him. Well wishes to you- Snick & Viv |
