Could it be wrong diagnosis for giardia? I have Bella on 2 different meds for Giardia, vet had called let message while we were on vacation said she tested positive for it... She had NO symtoms...NOTHING....in all my reading on the subject, they say how hard it is to diagnois, even with symptoms! The meds are making her vomit, she is only 1.9 pounds, I am getting a lil nervous, cause in all the reading I see it says not to give the one med to small puppies....1.9 is SMALL...she is on panacur and metronidazole. I have call into vets, waiting for her to call me back, but wanted some opinions before she does, so I have more questions to ask...I am new to all this... Thanks everyone |
So, she has no symptoms of anything at all but the vet said she tested positive for Giardia after a routine check-up? What test was done to determine that it was Giardia? If it was a stool antigen test, I believe that only determines if there are Giardia antibodies - which would mean she either has it or has had it. I went through about a year of antibiotics for h.pylori, and finally had a specialist say I didn't have it, but had antibodies for it and I had it previously, but that the tests I had been given only tested for antibodies, not the actual organism. |
When I first got Milo he tested positive, we did two rounds of drugs and he still tested positive, he also had no symptoms. Then the Vet gave me a powder (I do not remember the name only it was very hard to hide in stuff to get him to take it) and she said that if he still tested positve after this one than there were going to send it out to the CDC for another kind of test that is not regulary done as sometimes the regular test can come up with a false positve. As it turned out the last one did the trick so nothing else had to be done. Good Luck |
Armani tested positive when he first came home... he was on panacur for 5 days or so and then he was fine. WalnutHill: it often comes up during routine checks because it is just found in a stool sample... many vets have you bring in a sample during your first visit and subsequent yearly visits, so it is just found when they look for any other parasite. |
O thanks for the responses... It was from the stool sample, I took in... Bella is on Panacur and metronidazole...then we go back a week after she is done and bring another sample. They started Shay on it today, since they are togeather 24/7...and I have a compromised immune symtom....just to be on safe side... I hope this is it, and it is gone with next check up! Thanks again everyone |
