Lump after rabies vaccine My Chloe has a quarter sized lump from where she recieved her rabies vaccine. :eek:The tech had a horrible time getting her to stay still... Chloe is a screamer, even before she gets stepped on she will scream - so you can imagine the shot. Well. I have read that a lump after a rabies vaccine is normal - but will it go away like kids vaccination bumps do, or will it be permanent. I am totally freaking out... but I definitely know it was where her rabies shot was given... any help is appreciated! Thank you so much! |
It will go away. It might take a week or two, but it will go away. :) I remember the first time I felt "the lump". I was in tears imagining every terrible thing possible, thank goodness I had a wonderful vet! |
It is normal and will go away in a few days or possibly even a week. I would give the vet a call and he might suggest something to give for the pain. When one of mine got their first rabies vaccine she limped, had a bump and laid around for about 48 hours. Hang in there~it's tough being a momma. ;) |
Uni's took about a week or so to show up, and it was more softer, like a fatty tumor. I freaked! It took months for it to go away, I think bc she is so skinny. Katie on the other hand, the lump was very hard, and it went away in about a week. Crazy girls. |
Thank you all so much! I totally freaked. My previous dogs were English Bulldogs and I never experienced this. I was thinking the worst when it dawned on me that she had gotten her rabies shots about 4 days before. She was in alot of pain the next day - she wouldn't let anyone touch her neck... but she is better now. She got the vaccine on the 19th and I noticed the bump on the 23rd. She laid around alot that day, but she is great now... just for that lump that brought every worst case scenario to mind. Again, thanks a billion:animal-pa |
Funny, I am going through the same thing! Oliver and I were going to bed last night, and I went to pet him and felt this mass on his back... I FREAKED... I cried nearly all night watching him sleep, thinking the worst (lost my last dog to cancer). Even posted for prayers on YT, but after researching it and talking to my vet realized it is likely from his rabies vaccine last week. I know exactly how you feel! It's an awful feeling... My vet did warn that it could take months to go away.. she said just to watch it and make sure it isn't growing any larger. She didn't sound at all concerned about it. |
Chip had this and it went away after awhile. |
Thanks! I am going to give it 2 weeks... if it does not go away within that time frame I am going to take her into the vets office. The tech who handles the minor stuff (she has alot of first hand knowledge about animals) told me that alot of dogs react to rabies shots... and since Chloe wiggled her way through it - it was no suprise she got a lump. Do you think it's unreasonable for me to wait 2 weeks before taking her to a veteranarian since she has already seen the tech? I love Chloe with all my heart, and part of me wants to get it poked and prodded and certified okay... but then part of knows that the lump is at the exact site of injection... :animal-pa |
Rabies vaccines are killed, adjuvanted vaccines. Adjuvants are inflammatory components (like aluminum salts, which are known carcinogens) added to ehance the immunological response -- a human equivalent is the tetanus vaccine. These cause swelling at the injection site. Personally, I would watch the site carefully to make sure the lump goes away, if it does not, have a needle aspiration done in several spots. You should notice it starting to shrink. If you go to this link, http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ions-dogs.html , you will note that 19.4% of the adverse reactions reported to rabies vaccine manufacturers were injection site swelling or lump. |
I'm glad that I found this thread. I am currently watching a small lump that Lailia has. She received her rabies shot on the 17th of this month and still has the bump as of the 30th. I am almost positive that it is related to her rabies vaccination, but because I avoided touching the areas where she had been vaccinated for a few days afterward (due to what I perceived would be soreness for her), I cannot state that with complete confidence. She seems to have some residual sensitivity in the area, which I would expect to be normal if she had a reaction to the shot. Her behavior has been normal since within a couple of days of her vaccinations. This thread has made me feel a lot better about it and I will just continue to keep an eye on it for a while longer. |
Yes, Deena, keep a close eye on that lump, if it gets any bigger, bring your girl in to your veterinary care provider. |
Several days ago I noticed a lump on Puff's leg. After hours of panic and grief I realized that its right where she had her rabies shot! She didn't feel well at all for 24-36 hours after getting it. |
