Yucky Pooh! Okay...now I'm really worried. Maddie went outside today, rolled in something and then put it in her mouth! I quickly got to her and it was poop! It was not her poop and the only thing I can think of is it was raccoon poop. She did this same thing 2 days ago. Had to bring her in and brush her teeth and give her a bath. I could throw up just at the thought of it! Anyway, the reason I'm now worried is because I did a search on raccoon poop and it carries a type of roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) and it can cause serious problems for animals (other than raccoons) or humans. Here's what it says: If ingested by an abnormal host, the eggs penetrate the small intestine (which they apparently do not do in raccoons) and undergo an aberrant migration through the body. The eggs hatch, and the larvae migrate to the brain, eyes and other organs. The parasite has been implicated in cases of serious eye disease or central nervous system disorders and infection can cause death or paralysis depending on the location in the body and number of worms. Maddie actually had that poop in her mouth, so I'm scared. I will be calling the vet on Monday to see about getting a wormer for her. I hope that stuff they give dogs works for these type worms! Maybe that wasn't raccoon poop, but that's the only thing I can think of...the little stinkers mess around back there at night. I'm thinking of getting one of those live animal traps and trying to catch them and relocate them. Maddie has never eaten her own poop as some dogs do, and her doing this now has totally repulsed me. She no longer has free run of the back yard...she's on her leash. That puts a damper on her squirrel hunting, but she'll have to live with that...little stinker! So, anyone out there ever had to deal with raccoon poop? |
Nope But im sure my yard has some in it. we live out in the country and see lots of wild animals every day. thanks for posting this. I will be watching their every move now. |
I never knew this either. We live in the country also. Now im going to be watching close. thanks for the info. |
No we live in the city so we see raccoons but not very many. I hope the vet can help you. |
