to those who feed orijen As many of you know, Ive switched my furkids to orijen red. Now Ive got 5 out of 7 scratching instead of two.????????????? This food thing has got me totally confused................... |
Orijen I have not tried the Orijen Red; but mine are on a rotation of Orijen puppy and Orijen 6-fish. I haven't had a problem with any of them scratching since starting Orijen(about 4-5 months ago). Also check your shampoo, that could be an issue also.. Hope this helps:) |
We are also using Orijen puppy without any issues. |
Linda, I see this thread is a couple of days old. Are they still itching? With so many scratching, I would doubt it's the food. Have they been anyplace different? Did you change any cleaning products, etc. recently? Do you know what the allergen levels in your area have been (thinking this sounds environmental more than food allergy related). |
We have high alergen levels in Napa Valley, but Ive never had problems with the dogs except two. Im dumbfounded. They just dont seem happy on the orijen. Stool is good one day then runny the next, all are itching. Nothing new except the dog food. These guys are going to finish me off having grey hair thats for sure........ |

Well, that's the extent of my ideas for you...sorry. Oh, I did want to ask if they seemed to like the Orijen Red? I'm still on the search for the perfect food for my guys, and they didn't care much for the Orijen 6 Fish when I tried a sample of it a while back. And of course I can't feed the original because it has chicken in it. It just never ends..... |
Linda, are they on a flea preventative? Since it's getting a little warmer, fleas are reappearing. I found flea dirt on Mimi & a flea crawling on Princess' tummy. I freaked out & applied frontline on all of them even tho I hate doing that. I've switched to Acana Grasslands & I'm still not comfortable w/the protein level. Momo had major runs today & vomited once earlier. I have no idea why. One thing positive tho, Mimi has stopped picking on her #2...knock on wood.:D |
They ate it well the first couple of weeks then refused to eat it. They also all acted different, cant really pinpoint, just not their usual self. Yes we use flea preventatives but not all year. Mine are pretty much confined to our house, their outside area is cement. I havent started letting them out back in the yard yet. I think Im going to do some research on blue buffalo. I have a friend with 6 yorkies who switched to BB and they all seem to be doing well. You know I love my yorkies with all my heart, but I have never had any dog breed that is so high maintenance........ |
Do you think it's the higher protein? Orijen red has 38%. Do they act or seem tired after eating? Acana Grasslands has 33% & I'm so not comfy w/it. Momo's episode had nothing to do w/the food. I found the end part of a squeaker in his normal #2. High maintenance for sure, but I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world! |

I noticed too that after starting my dogs on Acana that they had NO energy level and I even posted on here about it asking if it was common. They literally would sleep all day long and that was very uncommon for TUcker, my little wild man, who never stops moving. After a few weeks on it, thier energy levels did pick up some but never got back to the way they were. I had to take Tucker off it because he was having issues with it. He is a competely different dog since the switch, back to being my wild child..lol High protien just doesnt work for us. |
Hmm, so do you think it's the protein? I know after spending a lazy sunday afternoon at a friend's bbq, I get really sleepy lol. Mine all seem to sleep/lounge a lot more. That could also be one of the reasons for weight gain? This food thing really is stressing me out & like Linda said, most likely the cause of all the grey hairs! |
Thats exactly what Im thinking. Well Im going to try to do some more research and see if I can find a good dog food with no grain but lower protein. And Jenny your right headaches, grey hairs and all are worth it I wouldnt trade mine for the world either..............thanks. |
Too strange....the higher protein in the ACANA made my guys more energetic. This is one of the reasons why we love it...when they were on 22% (Natural Balance), Izzy had NO energy. Once we switched to ACANA, she went back to her happy playful self (and my other guys have been happy on it as well). |
I was wondering about Orijen for my little girl, but I've read that with such the high protein levels it's more suited for larger breeds??? |
Do you have a pet supply place in your area that have free samples of the high end pet foods? You can call around and find out. That is what I did and the ones that were not available ordered samples online and then fed them to Starr one at a time to see if she had an allergic reaction so that I would know what it was from and if she liked the food. The Puppy Lovers for Dogs is made in Missouri and I thought I would support a local company, but, after two days she would not touch the food. There was a couple other high end brands that she did not like and I kept the wrappers so that I wouldn't buy them. |
