Glucosamine for LS or MVD dog? Lucky me, my little guy has grade 3 LP and maybe a liver shunt based on high BAT's. So my question is would you give your LS or MVD dog glucosamine? |
Does your pup have symptoms of LS? Glucosamine is not great in this case, but it may be better than letting the LP go. My girl's BA have been 106 and I did use it for awhile. She is asymptomatic though. |
I would not add any supplements until you consult an internist and find out whether or not he has a shunt. |
Agreed. You first need to consult with an Internal Medicine Specialist to confirm a Liver Shunt or MVD. Then you can worry about the LP :( ...so sorry... My Roxy had bi-laterial LP surgery...then we found out she most likely has MVD. What are the Bile Acid results? |
I have the same issue so first let me say I am sorry you are dealing with this. As other said, you first need to determine if your dog has a shunt or MVD. If its MVD, you have to weigh the benefits and risks for yourself. I personally decided to put my MVD dog on Dasuquin (a joint supplment) because her LP was causing her to limp a lot and on the supplement she doesnt limp at all... she has no symptoms, is on a low protein diet and gets medicine only when necessary... so I felt for her the benefits outweighed the risks. |
Thanks to all of you for your responses, they are appreciated. Bailey had BAT's of pre 17 and post 113. He has not shown any of the typical signs/ symptoms of a liver shunt. He is a very energetic 20 month old at 3lbs 13oz. He is on the Royal Canin Hepatic food and I was adding a liquid glucosamine but stopped doing that recently when I read that glucosamine is processed by the liver. Thanks again all. |

My Roxy's first and highest post # was 100.9 and since her diet change and liver aiding supplements, her post has come down to the 60 to 80 range. I give her 1/2 capsule of Cosequin daily for her joints. The company Nutra Max is really the only company to have run successful clinical trials on the joint products, so I trust them ;) |
I would not add any supplements unless cleared with your vet. Whether MVD or LS....wouldn't want to add difficulty to a liver that is not functioning properly |
I don't know if this will help, but I found this on-line about LS and diet: How to Adapt a Yorkie's Diet to Treat Portosystemic Shunts | eHow.com |
