peeing and holding it too long. Pixie is 7 months old now and lately she will pee around 7or 8 pm and then not go again until about 8 -9 am. We get up at six and she will not pee. Is it normal for a 7 month old dog to hold it that long? She use to pee first thing in the morning, now she waits till I get back from the gym. She acts fine eats and drinks and poops runs around and plays. This started happening after I found a tick on her private area, I don't know if it has anything to do with it or if it is just coincidence. There is no redness down there where the tick was. Any help would be appreciated. I am just a lil worried. |
That sounds waaaaaaaaaay too long to me and I'd be concerned, because I would think there would be a risk of getting an infection. I would expect a bigger yorkie to go a long time, but not even 12 hrs. I dunno. Do you wait for her to go of a morning and give her time to sniff first? |
Wow that is a very long time not too relieve herself. I would ask the vet about that just to be sure. Buddy holds it for 9 hrs with no problem. I've never pushed him any farther, no need to. He goes out at 9:30 in the evening then again at 6:00 am and pees like a race horse several times on our morning walk. Then again at 8am before I leave for work and pees several times again. It won't hurt to ask the vet at least you'll have your answer. |
Seems unlikely! Is it possible that she is relieving herself in the house, somewhere you have not noticed? Check for a wet whiddler, ever couple of hours, to see! One of my monsters dos that on rain days. "no Mom, I'm fine, maybe later...;)" But on closer inspection...... the deed was done! lol If she IS holding that long, I would be getting a vet check. About an hour per month of age, up to 7-8 hrs is good holding power! IMO |
Hmm... I dunno. Some dogs may just be able to hold it longer, but it's odd that she never did it before. Jackson sometimes will hold it longer than other nights, and I think it's because he's too tired to get up in the mornings! LOL. Last night, he went pee around 9:45pm and held it until 9:30am this morning. That's not typical of him, he was just really tired this morning. Usually he holds it about 9-10 hours overnight. |
Pixie is pad trained and I have a pad in her ex-pen and in the living room. She usually goes when she has too. I am a light sleeper and I never see her jump off the bed to go. If I get up in the middle of the night she follows me and I will walk her over to her pad and try to intice her to go and nothing. Sometimes I will shut her in the ex-pen and tell her to go and I walk away and come back after I have gone to see if she goes and still nothing. today she had went around 7pm and I tried to get her to go before we went to bed and she would not. I went to bed and around 6 am we got up and usually she runs for her pad first thing in the morning. This morning she ate her breakfast and I tried to get her to go and Nothing. So I went to the gym and around 8:30 I came home and I thought I thought she would of gone by then and still nothing so I let her out of her ex-pen she ran up and down the hall a few times and then FINALLY peed on her pad. Weird.........I called the vet and he said as long as she is acting fine not to worry. well she is acting fine and during the day goes about every 4 hrs. It was a pretty good size pee when she finally did. She is such a lil squirt and stubborn. If she knows you want her to do something it is like whats in it for me? lol My concern is I don't want her getting a UTI. I can't make her go though. I have checked for pee spots in the house and have not found any unless she is going somewhere I haven't checked. Maybe I should get a black light to see if there are any hidden pee pee spots. She is stressing me out with this. UGH:( |
You mean you don't wanna squeeze it out of her?:D |
We had a dog several years ago who suddenly started going in the house instead of even ATTEMPTING to hold it until 6am when we got up. I soon learned to count when he started peeing outside -- "one one-thousand, two one-thousand" and if he had at least a five second pee I knew I was okay. If less, I started looking for a hidden wet spot. Hubby and daughter soon learned not to talk to me when I was at the door watching the dogs potty. It seems I got a little irate if I lost count :D |

Hmm...Chloe has always gone all night (in her crate) without peeing. She's almost a year old now and we go for our last time at about 9:00 or 9:30 pm and then she goes when we get up in the morning which is anywhere between 7:00 & 8:00 am. We do take her food and water away at 8:00pm; not sure if that makes a difference in how long she can hold it. Also, in the mornings it's not like she rushes straight outside and immediately goes. She spends a few minutes stretching and saying good morning to us, then wanders around the yard to find the perfect place. So I don't get the feeling that she's under a lot of "pressure"! ;) -C |
[QUOTE=yorkiejunkie;3051579] Check for a wet whiddler, ever couple of hours, to see! One of my monsters dos that on rain days. "no Mom, I'm fine, maybe later...;)" But on closer inspection...... the deed was done! lol This made me actually laugh out loud~ Lucky pulls the same deed!! Mostly though when he is outta my sight for maybe 10-15 mins....I know then he has done something....he never is too far from me! Sure enough ...when I feel below, he is wet:eek:! Then he gives me the 'WHAT??!!' look, Like I am trying to blame him or something!! |
I take Teddi for a walk in the morning and she does a lot of pees (maybe 6) and a poop. When I get home from work I usually try to take her out but sometimes she goes and sometimes she doesn't (if it is too cold or windy she will just sit down). I usually feed her dinner around 7:30 and then I will take her out and she will pee and then she is fine until the morning. I have pee pads down in the house and during the day, while I am gone to work, she will pee about 3 times a week and poop about 3 times a week. She is only 3 lbs. and seems to be able to hold it for about 12 hours! |

axel, goes quite awhile i have noticed lately that he will go all day and not pee on his pad he is in the laundry room during the day from 6am till 3pm and 9 hours have gone by he waits till i get home (don't know what he is doing in there all day but not peein) and then he goes on one of the pee pads in the house so I don't think you need to worry. |
I didn't read all the responses, so I don't know if anyone has already said this. But Capone is a bigger yorkie 10lbs, and he does this from time to time. I asked the vet about it and she said it was fine he probably just didn't feel the tingle at the time. She said not to be afraid as long as he didn't seem in pain while he was going or as long as long as he wasn't doing a bunch of little pees. But he is a bigger yorkie and he goes once at 7am, sometimes around 11 if he feels like it and again at 6 and at 9 if he feels like it. Maybe it's something you can call and talk to the vet about before taking her in. |
Buzz is 8 months old, and goes at 10 p.m. @ night, along w/Apple I let them out about 6 a.m....If I wait 'till 7, he pees on his pad...He's such a good boy...Apple pees on the floor...She's such a naughty girl...lol...I don't get upset w/her, because she weighs a little less than 5 lbs., and I think asking her to wait 9 hrs. is a bit much...She'll go 8 hrs., so it's my bad, not hers...I just wish she'd go on the pad, but that's out of the question...It always has been  |
I take my little girl every 2-3 hours because she is pregnant. I am not sure if I really need to take her that much but I do anyway because I remember how I felt when I was preggers! |
Lil' Miss Izzie is 3 yrs old and goes when we get up in the morning (5:45), once during the daytime while she in confined in the kitchen and then again before we head upstairs for the night (9:00pm) |
I really think it depends on the dog and mostly on the owner. My friend has a 25 lb. cockapoo and her dog pees about 3 times during the day on the pads. Her dog is the same age as Teddi (3 1/2 years old) and I told her that there is no way she needs to pee that much during the day and that she should be able to hold it. My brother has a cockapoo that is the sister of my friends dog and their dog holds it all day. My friend I think kept the pee pads down too long and she said even if she takes them away her dog will go into the kitchen and pee on the floor so she would rather have them down. I've never heard of a dog that big using pads and not being able to hold it but I guess each dog is different. |
I think dogs, like humans, are all different. Oliver holds it 9-10 hours at night, and has lately started holding it all day until I get home, he downright refuses to go outside for anyone but me unless it's really nice out. I really wouldn't worry about it (easier said than done, I know!). Maybe she's just been blessed with a large bladder! Wish I was! lol |
If Bandit sleeps with us (which he only does on rare occasion now) he can hold it for 12 hours. It seems odd though, because you're taking her out and she's being active and she's not going. I'd definitely ask your vet about it! |

I walk Sasha between 9PM and 10PM and then crate her. I walk her again in the morning around 7AM, but she goes right away. I'm not sure why your baby doesn't go right away, but as long as she's going potty OK the rest of the day I don't think there's any cause for concern. Is she drinking enough water? I free feed Sasha, but that's only because I'm able to keep an eye on her most of the day... good luck! |

Well the mystery solved. Pixie is GUILTY as charged. This morning I was making the bed as I always do first thing and I saw Pixie run into the kitchen and I thought I would follow her bc she didn't go towards the living room where the ex-pen is and her pee pad. Low and behold that lil Sh** peed on my rug by the door. I was so surprised bc she has not peed on the floor in over 2 months. I think what happens is she saw Daisy go outside with daddy and she was waiting for them to come back in and decided that was a good place to go. So tomorrow morning I am onto her I am walking her into the livingroom and watching her use her pad. I would take her outside to pee but it is still real cold in CT first thing in the morning. She looked up at me like uh oh I got caught out!!! Well at least I know she isn't holding it too long.lol |
