Flea and Tick Control I am trying to decide what type of flea and tick control to use on my 3.5 pound male yorkie who is 7 months old. I have heard that Frontline makes their hair really greasy. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried Advantix? |
I had Jackson on Frontline Plus in early summer of last year and he got like 10 or more ticks in a few weeks span. It was so frustrating. I switched to K9 Advantix and haven't had 1 tick to my knowledge since. The Advantix makes his hair pretty greasy but it only lasts for about 1 day. I try as hard as possible to just get it on the skin and not the hair. |
I don't like heartworm meds that go on their skin- just way too many chemicals- the scent alone is enough to kill anything. I use Interceptor. It is a small pill that I put in Layla's treats- and it is only for heartworm- not fleas or ticks. I wanted the least amount of chemicals in her as possible and fleas and ticks are not really an issue for us- and if they were- i see the treatment of them as better than the potential danger of all the extra stuff in her. |

You're lucky fleas/ticks aren't a big issue where you are! They are CRAZY here in the summer. Ticks are so gross. Jackson got Lyme disease from all the nasty ticks he got on him in the beginning of the summer and I just wouldn't wanna go thru all that again. If it hadn't of been treated or caught early, tick diseases can be deadly! We get quite a few mosqitoes around here as well and I like that the Advantix repels them too. |

Ticks are not an issue here unless we are in the bush- and that's not my thing :p you are right- lyme disease can be deadly and if that is an issue where you live- you NEED to prevent against it. |
Thanks for all the responses. I still can't decide what to do. Hadley really doesn't go out right now much as he uses puppy pads in the garage but as warm weather approaches he will. I am debating on Sentinel ( friend uses that on her Yorkie) but Ive heard it doesn't always work for the fleas but is also treats worms and parasites, or using Frontline spray so I can decide on how much, its not greasy either. So many decisions. Just want to make sure he is flea, tick and parasite free with using as few chemicals as possible. :) |

(I know this post is about fleas and ticks, but I wanted to respond to this statement.) |
We just started on comfortis on the 1st. I'm happy with it. We were using k9 advantix and it seemed fine except how oily and topical and with 2 dogs rolling around in my bed I just hated the thought of what I was touching when I pet them and the residue getting on carpet, my sheets and furniture. it was a hard choice... chemical in the dog or on the dog... sigh |
Thanks I was looking at Interceptor |
