Raw hide bones - yes or no? I was told by the vet that my yorkie shouldn't be eating raw hide until she's at least a year old because young pup's digestive systems won't break down the raw hide. Now my yorkie is turning 1 year, next month. She is currently 5-6 pounds...I have received raw hide bones as presents for her in the past and have put them aside because of what the vet said....can I now give them to her? Or should I still wait....I'd love to hear people's opinions of whether they give their yorkies raw hide bones or not or people's opinions of raw hide in general. Thanks in advance! |
I don't let mine have rawhides. They can really upset their tummies and cause blockages in these small dogs. I know a lot of people give their yorkies Bully sticks. I haven't tried them though. |
I wouldn't. As said above, they're known for not being digestable. When Jackson was around 4 or 5 months old, he was eating a rawhide bone (before I knew better) and it got all soggy and wet and he began choking on it. Thank goodness I was home to remove it from his throat. He's picky with his bones/treats/chews and all he gets are bully sticks and Himalayan chews, both 100% digestible. |
I don't think they're good for small dogs in general. I cut up some rawhide into about 3-4 inches and let Magnus chew on it. I immediately took it away and never gave it to him again after I saw him choking on it. Plus, once it gets really chewed on enough to be soggy and what not, it really stinks. -_- I heard those bully sticks were good but I haven't tried them myself either. I might pick one up this weekend though. |
I used to give rawhide, too. But then I heard that it is not easily digestable at any age. Plus, it can come off in chunks and your pup can choke on it. Now, mine chew on rope toys, natural bones and plush squeeky toys. They don't seem to miss the rawhide. |

We typically give bully sticks as chews but I'll be honest, I've given rawhides in the past. Franklin is a mega chewer and rawhides were the only things I could find that would last more than 10-20 minutes. Like others have said, they can be dangerous because they break off into pieces and aren't digestible (even though they claim they are) so I wouldn't recommend them but we never had a problem. I always watched them extremely closely when they were chewing. I don't really give them anymore because we feed prey-model raw now and they get a ton of chewing exercise from eating. |
I for one do not feed any raw hides at all. The possibility of it not breaking down in their intestinal track and causing infection is just too high. I buy bully sticks from a YT member here and feel comfortable that this is a lot safer. |
